Submission + - Spanish news site shows porn photo in main page

Andr T. writes: "It seems a Spanish news site called Diario Barcelona has inadvertently published a porn photo in the main page for ten hours (spanish site). The programmer in charge approved the photo (submitted by a trainee) and went to the beach, turning his cell phone off.

Google's (terrible) translator version of the page can be read here."

Submission + - Stem cells now extracted from fallopian tubes (translational-medicine.com)

Andr T. writes: "The Journal of Translational Medicine published today an article written by Brazilian scientists claiming they were able to fully develop stem cells from human fallopian tubes:

The possibility of using stem cells for regenerative medicine has opened a new field of investigation. The search for sources to obtain multipotent stem cells from discarded tissues or through non-invasive procedures is of great interest. It has been shown that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) obtained from umbilical cords, dental pulp and adipose tissue, which are all biological discards, are able to differentiate into muscle, fat, bone and cartilage cell lineages. The aim of this study was to isolate, expand, characterize and assess the differentiation potential of MSCs from human fallopian tubes (hFTs).

Does this mean we could have stem cell research without ethical problems? It has already been shown that stem cells can be extracted from ubilical cords, dental pulps and adipose tissue as well.""

Submission + - Brazilian voting system provider says it's unsafe (terra.com.br)

andretaff writes: "Terra, a Brazilian internet provider, published today a story (text in Portuguese) in one of their blogs claming that Frederico Gregorio, a shareholder of Microbase, the company that develops the Brazilian voting system, said his own system is unsafe (the translation is mine):

"We want to use this opportunity to share our opinion, as technicians that participated in the 1996, 1998 and 2000 projects, regarding the Brazilian voting system security. Those projects are, in our point of view, completely unsafe. (...) You can boot the system using a external disc which is absolutely unacceptable, regardless of the OS being used. The use of Linux as OS increases exponentially the chances of someone creating a external booting malware, given that being a system of open source, there are many skilled people that know how it works deeply from the boot until the system is ready to use"

If he is saying that, who I am to disagree?"
