Comment Two distros (Score 1) 319

I'm in favour of actually teaching them two distros for different tasks:

First category is either Slackware or LinuxFromScratch to teach people about how the system works and what solutions you can be expected to start at when trying to figure out problems down the road (setting up network, actually taking a look at how automounting works and so on)

Second category is whatever distribution suits the needs for other tasks the most and use it to get stuff done (for instance installing an officesuite or gimp, or setting up apache)

As a third category I really would recommend a BSD-flavour so that people will get to know proper tools (don't get me wrong, I cut my teeth on a slackware/debian combination but BSDs tools really impresses me, especially for networking)

Ironically enough Go is the one reason I can think of for actually getting a tablet. I would use it as a 10-inch, go-ban where one just point and that automatically keeps track of time and record the games.. of course this requires touchscreen.

But yeah, at their current pricepoint it would be cheaper with a proper clock and a foldable go-ban and stones could be made to take the same size (when folded) and would feel nicer to use.

(Still, the notion of kgs and using this on a train/bus is tempting)

Get him to read anything written of/about Deming about what is wrong with current management I'd say.

The book "Dr. Deming: The American Who Taught the Japanese about Quality" by Rafael Aguayo is probably the easiest to grasp for most people (and is a book I would recommend to pick up and read in general anyways).

DOS - Really fun to code in, stayed out of the way, great as a bootloader, and also as an execution platform for writing small OSes (just write what is needed to be replaced, canabilize DOS for the rest until your OS can stand on its own)

AmigaOS - full to half decade ahead of the rest, interesting oddballs, was the core of the demoscene for quite some time.

BeOS - basically a modern OS done right (hybrid kernel).

Hard one since I'd love to see all three come back on its own merits...

I did. Opera is the only window I have open (sure, the mdi in it is working hard). However, I do most stuff in console and basically only use X for opera, mplayer (have no accelerated video working in console) and occasional gaming.

But I guess it all comes down to how one interprets "terminal", since the rest of the questions was related to windowing systems I assumed it was for instances of "Xterms" of different forms, otherwise the question still would be open. (for instance I'm right now logged into 9tty's on this machine, and use about 30-40 pts'es in screen. But if we count those, just how do we then count all the daemonised and bg'ed shellscripts (and for that matter, with mobile devices, just how many of them have a non-accessible terminal running in the background?))

So, it all comes down to the interpretation of "terminal" for me. (and yes, I did set X to start opera directly)
