Journal Journal: Sudden disconnect.

There is a saying that goes something like "when you feel that you are the only one you know who is sane, chances are it's actually you who are insane." Likewise, my father used to tell me that the only common item in all my failed ventures was... well, me. I took this to heart, and I apply it to the world around me today. I live a happy life, with a great wife, two kiddos and a really decent job. While like most, I can spend all day complaining about things; overall I'm pretty happy with only superficial complaints.

I have my problems. I talk too much. I offend the easily offended. I sometimes piss people off with my flippant attitude and comments. I'm not the greatest husband, father, or friend, but I'm certainly not the worst. In the name of humor I get myself in trouble sometimes. The instance I'm writing about now goes something like this... A friend tells me that she only has a couple of bucks left in her bank account. We discuss the matter in my cube for around ten minutes, and I even offer to loan her some money, out of genuine concern for her wellbeing. Here is where the trouble comes in. Another friend comes over, and for some reason he and I start talking about money. He says that he's got some extra cash, and I suggested that he share a little of that cash with my buddy. I think I said something like "Well, if you've got so much money, why don't you give some to [my buddy]." In no way did I imply the financial situation of my buddy. I rattled off that sentence as an inside joke. In my eyes, there is no harm, no foul. The friend with extra cash thinks my commentary is in regards to his bragging, and my buddy gets the other side of the joke.

Only the buddy doesn't get the joke. She does, but she's offended by it. She thinks that I'm breaking her confidence and exposing her to mockery. She says that I'm "throwing her under the bus." She says "you always do that", "you do that to make yourself feel bigger", "you bring up sh*t to embarrass me." I keep telling her, "Look, I think it's funny. You enjoy it when I do the same thing to other people, but you freak out when I toss around stuff regarding you" I also told her that if she doesn't like it, she has two options... stop telling me stuff she doesn't want me to make light of, or stop talking to me. Over and over again we've had this discussion, and yesterday it happened again. I was standing at her cube and she informed me that a coworker on our floor had two bags of Halloween candy. I asked her if there was any good stuff in the bags. She said she didn't know but that she heard there was lots of tootsie rolls. She then said that she didn't like plastic chocolate. The conversation continued for two or three more lines, and then we both headed down to the candy in question. Once we got there, I noticed a bunch of starburst. I asked her if starburst was one of the plastic candies that she didn't like. Then, because I have a habit of making jokes, she assumed that I was "doing it again", and got all pissed off.

Now, I've thought about this for a while, and I'm still confused by why she got so frigg'en pissed off, but then it hits me! She has a history that demands she destroy every relationship she is in. I have a lot of dedicated friendships. Many have held together for years, and I'm constantly adding to the list. All in all, I've disjoined with only one friend in the past, oh say... 5 years. HER! She is constantly complaining about how alone she is. Yet the only common piece in all her relationship failures is... well... her.

I give up. I'm not going to me mean to her. I'll listen to her stories. I'll smile at her in the hall. But just like everybody else in her life, I'm tired of dealing with her constant freak outs. I'm done. Bye bye.

WTF? Are any of you SBC workers? Any of you SBC Union members?

I need someone to tell me 1) why unions of this nature exist, and 2) what is this union really trying to accomplish?

Journal Journal: Triathlon Plans

This weekend I will compete in my first triathlon. It is a sprint distance, which is a 400M Swim, 20K Bike, and a 5K run. I picked up my packet yesterday. It included some cool socks (imagine getting excited over new socks), a t-shirt, some cliff bars, a couple packets of 'goo', and other neat items. Last night I planned out my transition area strategy. I know how I'm going to pack everything in my bag so that when I'm getting my equipment ready, things will go as fast as possible. I'm confident, but nervous. I'll post my results on Monday.

Journal Journal: You think I swimming bad? You should see me bike and run!

I know a couple of people, from work, who compete in major athletic competitions. Seeing them train caused me to entertain the idea of trying a triathlon. I have never been an athlete. When I should have been learning to dribble or catch a pass, I was busy dealing with a debilitating illness. So I like the idea of working on my hand-eye coordination. I want to grow in muscle bulk, and trim down on table fat. Also, I stopped smoking cold turkey on Thanksgiving Day 2002, so I wanted to take advantage the new lung capacity. So for a couple of months last year, I started working out. I got a mountain bike, and bought a pair of running shoes. I'm apparently a Clydesdale, which means I'm over 200lbs. When I started I was 254lbs.

For those who don't already know (I didn't a year ago), a triathlon is a race were you compete in three different sports. In most, it's a swim followed by a bike, and then a run. There is a 'Sprint Tri', 'Olympic Tri', and an 'Iron Man Tri.' I'll explain more details about those in future JE's.

From March to about October of 2003, I worked out every day. I started out doing the best that I could do, but worked up to the point where I was happy with my performance. I rode my bike 20+ miles at least twice a week, and ran from 20-35 miles a week. My longest run was 10 miles. I was in the best shape of my life. I had lost 43 pounds, down to 211. I went from around 23% body fat, down to about 8%. I looked and felt a lot better.

Some time in November, I gave up on things. I got sick, the holiday event always got in the way, and the weather got cold... I had all the excuses and no motivation to get out and pound the ground. I stopped eating well, and stopped working out. I was always telling myself that I would get back to it, but I never did. In what seemed like no time at all, I lost everything I had done. I didn't put back on all the weight, but I was completely out of shape again. That didn't make the idea of starting to workout again any more attractive.

One of the athletic guys that I know offered to coach a couple of the other athletes, and myself, towards a triathlon. I told him I liked the idea, but I held (and still hold) reservations about my abilities. I forced myself to get back on the bike, and I've been out to run a couple of times, but that doesn't help me do anything about my swim. My coach asked me if I could swim, and honestly I answered "yes". He asked, "Do you swim with your face in the water?" I thought back to a couple of years ago when I was in a friends pool and as honest as I could be I said "oh, yeah." So Coach tells me to call him when I'm ready to go swim, he'll meet me at the pool, and we'll start the training.

I couldn't call him. I just went to the pool to make sure that I could swim as well as I remembered. I swam as well as I ever have, which in all honesty, was not very well at all. As I studied the swimmers on both sides of my lane, I noticed how I was doing EVERYTHING wrong. I really don't put my face in the water. I just move my nose back and forth through the water like a facial pendulum. It is true that I "put my face in the water", but only for a spit second. I also noticed that I wasn't using my legs for anything useful. But, that's what coaches are for. They tell you what you are doing wrong, and how to correct it.

The next time I went to the pool, Coach was there waiting on me. I swam two lengths for him and that was enough. He told me that used to teach kids, but he had never taught anyone so novice as me. "*Warning* huge blow to ego". I asked him what to do, and he gave me some drills. So I'm not a swimmer, now I wonder if I'm a biker or a runner. Maybe it just wasn't meant for me to race.

Blah blah blah... that ends this JE, if I ever feel inspired i'll write more.

Journal Journal: What do I do with irregular papers? 1

Hello '04.

I have a child who is in kindergarten. I don't know what to do about the large volume of paper that is coming home. I scan the 8x11 sheets that don't have glue, glitter, rope, etc. I don't want to gum up my sheet feed scanner. The ones I'm really worried about are the large format ones. Sometimes she comes home with paper as long as 18 inches. Booklets that they make are hard to manage as well. I want to think long term. I want to keep the paper trail of how he learned to read and write, but I'm at a loss of where to draw the line. Do I keep everything and buy HUGE boxes and store them in the attic? Do I keep "special" ones, and toss the rest? Who gets to decide what the special ones are. I know many people deal with this same problem everyday. I also know that some of them have a great answer to this question. Do any of your have any suggestions?

Journal Journal: I'm getting better

Journal Journal: blah blah blah

Wife's best friend(s) are coming over tonight. 4 kids, wow! What a way to start a weekend. With any luck, tomorrow will hold a 50+ mile bike ride for me. I need to spend more time on my bike each week or I will not be ready for my races. Today I got invited to run in a 26.2 mile two man relay. I'm not used to going 13.1 miles in one run. I also need to get some time in the pool. I'm not much of a swimmer, but I have a sprint triathlon in May. I'm told it has an ocean swim, and I'm not used to swimming a mile in ocean water either.

Have a good weekend.

Journal Journal: the swing of things...

Wow! It has been such a long time with no updates. And that was cool, because there has been no one to read my ponderings. That is, until today. I just found that I have one secret admirer. I suspect I know who it is, and I'm excited by it. I can't believe I've been out of pocket for so long, and yet someone has been sitting by waiting for my return. I love fans. So a musically-devilish hello to you!

While I'm here, I'll make note that the wife and I sent our first kiddo to school this Monday. Mommy was WAY more emotional about it than I, but I was a little weepy about it too. My daughter loves it. She took to it like a duck to water. We are very proud of her. BTW, we are pregnant again, and due in February.

I've been going one weekend a month to visit with my dad. He has been really sick, and getting sicker every year. We missed out on a lot of the fairly tale bonding that you see in the movies, but we spend a day or two every month getting it back. The last time I was down there, he got his hands on two mini motor cycles. We tore the engines apart and rebuilt them. It was more an exercise in how stuff works than wanting to make them run again. I love to learn, and the more hands on the better. Before that, we worked on a lawn edger that I found, and now works perfect. I've went camping a couple of times, and I suspect that next time, we will be 'brush-hogging' about 65 acres of land that we own down there. Its really great to reconnect with my dad, and he really really enjoys it too. In fact, the more I go down there, the better his illness seems to be getting.

Independent sister has moved away. She lives in Maryland now. We are all sad, and miss her very much. We wish her the best of luck.

I've been running and biking my butt off. Literally! I run 3 to 5 miles a day 3 or 4 times a week, and I love it. I've been working out long enough now that it's a habit. I was ~250lbs, now I'm down in the 210's. I really need to get into the water and learn how to swim distance.

Thank God karma doesn't affect real life... oh wait... mine it still excellent... no worries :)

'till next time...
