Comment Re:You have a problem (Score 1) 102

You need to stop blaming Windows and/or the GPU vendor and troubleshoot your system. My GPU has reset precisely zero times when playing BF3, over a total of about 107 hours. I have seen GPU resets on my system on rare occasion, generally with broken software, but never in BF3 and I have more than a bit of testing with it.

You have something wrong on your system, you should figure out what.

I'm not saying there's nothing is wrong with my system. I can say we have
different systems I built mine not sure yours, but they are different.

This GPU reset I refer to is intentional and part of a program called a "Windows user experience"
"Windows User Experience Guidelines" http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=4249 (PDF)

The GPU reset is explained here in more detail."Timeout Detection and Recovery of GPUs through WDDM"

Nope sorry it's a windows feature since vista, I just disable it.

many cases of similar events happening on UNIX/Linux systems, so this problem is not specifically isolated to Windows."

Since Vista, the Windows OS deals with this by chatting with the graphics,
if the graphics doesn't reply in a reasonable amount of time the OS will reset the program.

Playing an intensive game like Battle Field 3 this tends to happen a lot. The video
card is too busy and doesn't have the time to chat; so the game just goes away.
Your either at your desktop like nothing is wrong other than not playing a game anymore,
or staring at the last graphics frame shown with a hard reset in your future.

VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE is what one error calls itself and fixed by disabling the "Timeout Detection and Recovery (TDR)."
Key added here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers then disabled.

I have a write up about this in my journal but it's not worth reading, it's wordy and doesn't flow a bit.

As I mentioned I bought the PS3 due to it's backwards compatibility. It was a time I played
a lot of single player PS2 games. Then my son took me to a PC "Call of Duty 2" lan party,
the next month "Call of Duty 4" was released and I was hooked on this series.

These two things happened at about the same time so !'ve never really used the PS3, other than
streaming video and Netflix; I had moved my gaming to the PC.

The Ratchet and Clank CD with the three PS2 versions cost less than $20 (U.S.)
I've only bought two PS3 games, both Ratcht and Clanks but they aren't as good as the PS2's;
neither played all the way through.

I could buy a PS3 now for half the price with 4X the storage space, so the hundreds of wasted
bucks were from purchasing something I really didn't need in the first place.

Here's a running list that's been online for years of how well a PS1/2 game will play on
the PS3 http://www.ps3comp.com/view.asp?flt=0-9&console=ps2
Other than "Up your Arsenal" all of my PS1/2 games I've tried have worked just fine.

To be fair "Up your Arsenal" was hard on the PS2 as well, when hundreds of nuts
and bolts came flying in, it would tax the system; on the PS3 there was just too much lag.

I had no use for the PS3 as I had gone to the PC for the CoD series but
it was the last version to be backwards compatible and I have a lot of PS1, 2 games.

My PC went down (had to replace the mother board) so I replayed my Ratchet and Clank
"Up your Arsenal". When you break crates nuts and bolt fly towards Ratchet; a lot of
crates and the PS3 emulator couldn't keep up with the graphics.

I ended up repurchasing all 3 of the PS2 versions of Ratchet and Clank on one CD (10Th anniversary edition or such.)
While very inexpensive by itself that game CD cost me hundreds of bucks ($, £, mula) everything considered.

The loss of this site: http://vx.netlux.org/ was a loss to everybody.

A place one could download the latest malware to see what it would do, now we have
malware businesses who might now mention a malware's name but little else.
Very very few people can find much of malware in use now.

Rootkits? I'm sure many are running them now; unless one can have access to sites
