Comment We've heard that before (Score 2) 370

So imagine you have automated vehicles that take you to a location, you hop out, then it just drives down the block and picks up the next person and takes them where they're going.

Uber made the exact same argument. That it would eliminate cars on the road but none of the traffic promises held true. In fact, Uber increased traffic in congested areas.

It's goofy to think self-driving cars will do what Uber could not.

Comment I'm concerned, but not because of Disney (Score 5, Interesting) 348

My fear with Netflix isn't Disney+, I can live without Disney content. What concerns me more is how much time I spend scrolling on Netflix, trying to find something decent to watch. They're spending billions on content, most of which is crap. Netflix has an interface that keeps throwing up things I've already seen in multiple categories. And there's no way to get rid of things I'm never going to watch. We've been loyal Netflix customers since before streaming was a thing. But if they don't get their shit together, we're going to bail. Or switch back to DVD only.

Pax are the worst part of driving, the slave wages are another. So Uber is going to take the number one problem with driving and make it worse. All the while drivers are shuttling around the public transportation unwashed, crazy, and criminal, Uber will be looking for new ways to dick them on compensation.

Death spiral, bankruptcy.

If it wasn't for the serious downside of getting caught, I would totally pay a "consultant" to raise my book rankings. I used ReviewTargeter and endured the rejection of dozens of pleas for reader reviews. It was miserable, thankless work...worse than thankless, apparently seeking a book review is an invitation for abuse. Doing things by the terms and conditions sucks ass.

The worst part was seeing products that were clearly inferior getting hundreds and thousands of reviews. They're not better writers, just better marketers.

Comment That doesn't fix the culture at Boeing (Score 5, Insightful) 258

The 737 design change positioned the engines so the plane needed a software fix to keep the nose down. Anyone who designs hardware knows that's a poor shortcut. The bottom line is Boeing rushed a duct tape software solution that used data from a single sensor, poor design in a software system. That sensor had a long history of failures, which means whoever developed the MCAS software was either inexperienced...very inexperienced...or was getting pressure from management to get it out the door. There is no way this comes out good for Boeing. Southwest just gave millions of customers a reason to choose a different airline.

Comment That's not enough (Score 1) 67

It's a good start but we need communication protocols so cars can talk to one another and so traffic control devices can talk to them. We need uniform standards for road sensors, lane markers and broadcast obstruction warnings.

Maybe this is the incentive we need to finally fix our broken infrastructure.

Comment Facebook is a megaphone (Score 3, Interesting) 376

Facebook is a megaphone for disinformation. True, there was disinformation around before they existed, before the internet existed, but to spread it you needed a budget. Facebook is like owning a printing press with a built-in distribution system.

If you're disseminating information that harms people, seriously harms them in some instances, where's the accountability?
