Comment Re:Crazy (Score 1) 7

It is crazy, instead of wasting the money on something like this, it could go towards better educating the children. Not to say this is a terrible idea, but I think a better solution would be to have a few heart rate monitors built into a fitness program to highlight the importance of exercise (Yes, I know, it is the bane of any /.er) and a balanced lifestyle. I wouldn't strap one of these to every kid though, thats a waste of money that can be used elsewhere.

Submission + - Is MySQL dead? (mysql.com)

nicc777 writes: Looking for new features on upcoming version of MySQL and then I found this: "The MySQL 6.0 Reference Manual has been retired. MySQL 6.0 was not developed beyond Alpha status and new releases have not been made for some time, so the manual has been withdrawn as well." Should I be looking for another DB System?

Submission + - Bell Canada Urges CRIA To Sue Its Own Subscribers

An anonymous reader writes: Bell Canada has told a Canadian government copyright consultation that the recording industry should be suing its subscribers. The company argued that not suing sends the wrong message and that it is waiting for lawsuits. The comments come as Canadians are being squeezed by the recording industry on one side and the copyright collectives on the other as Canada's copyright consultation winds down. With only five days left to speak out on copyright, the music and movie groups are calling for a DMCA+ model that includes three-strikes and you're out, while copyright collectives want new taxes on iPods. Time for Canadians to have their say before it's too late.

Submission + - Cell phone cost calculator killed in Canada (thestar.com)

inject_hotmail.com writes: Internet and law genius Michael Geist writes about some shinanigans by the cell phone carriers and the Canadian government in his column in The Star. Canadian tax payers funded a "Cell Phone Cost Calculator" so that the average person could theoretically wade through the disjointed and incongruent package offerings just to have to yanked a couple weeks before launch. Michael Geist suggests that the major cell carriers lobbied the appropriate public officials to have the program nixed because it would bite into their profit if the general people could make sense out of pricing and fees. Geist continues "Sensing that [Tony] Clement (Industry Minister) was facing pressure to block the calculator, Canadian consumer groups wrote to the minister, urging him to stick with it.". Moving forward Michael makes a novel suggestion, one that would show an immense level of understanding by the government — "With public dollars having funded the mothballed project, the government should now consider releasing the calculator's source code and enable other groups to pick up where the OCA (Office of Consumer Affairs) left off."

Submission + - Lucid Tucows CDN copyright consult submission

myvirtualid writes: "Tucows is participating in the Canadian government's copyright consultations — and their position is interesting, lucid, and diametrically opposed to big-label corporate we-want-a-Canadian-DMCA perspectives. From TFA,

In fact, excessive copyright protection, like a virus, seems to sicken innovation in every field it touches. Indeed, the industries currently trying to survive the digital upheaval by holding onto strict copyright enforcement laws are the ones that have been least innovative in coming up with new business models. Copyright is making them blind to the present and fatally uncreative about the future.

Submission + - Cdn Govt Caught Altering Copyright Submissions

An anonymous reader writes: The Canadian government is currently running a major consultation on copyright. Thousands of Canadians have spoken out, but it now appears that the government may be altering some of the submissions. People using an online tool are finding that their submissions are treated as form letters, even if they customize and create their own letter.

Submission + - Microsoft Drops Xbox 360 Pricing

Kawahee writes: "Microsoft PressPass has just released an article detailing an Xbox 360 price drop, starting August 2008:

Beginning Aug. 28, the price of an Xbox 360 Elite console will drop by $100, now priced at just $299.99 estimated retail price (ERP) in the United States. On top of that, the Xbox 360 Pro console will now be priced at $249.99 (ERP), reflecting a price reduction of $50

The arcade version has also had a reduction, down to $199.99. It appears Microsoft has answered Sony's move to offer the PS3 Slim."

Submission + - Obesity accelerates brain aging? (usnews.com)

natehoy writes: According to the US News and World Report, a recent study has shown a link between obesity and the loss of neurological tissue. The brains in elderly patients who were obese had an average of 8% less brain tissue than their trimmer counterparts. Overweight patients suffered about half the impact, or 4%.

This could have implications for the onset of dementia illnesses such as Alzheimer's. Just one more risk factor to add to the growing body (no pun intended) of reasons to try and stay trim.

Submission + - Pirating media in the office

An anonymous reader writes: I am a system admin for a medium sized company. Today i found out that the previous system admin had given local admin rights to a number of users, which will allow them to install any programs they want on their computers. On one PC, i found a bit torrent client installed and running, and a lot of music had been downloaded. What is the best way to deal with this user? I hate to be the internet gestapo, and would prefer to avoid a confrontation, but this can't be allowed to continue.

Submission + - Do IT people like sports?

SeminoleTom writes: So this is a question that was raised on a local sports talk show when one of the hosts said "Computer people do not like sports". As a huge sports fan I think it would be good to find out what my fellow 'geeks' think. Yes I am a geek but not all geeks are only into computers and science fiction. I play sports and watch on TV. I would love to hear what others have to say on this topic. Thanks.

Submission + - Fatal explosion at russian hydroelectric dam

stadium writes: An oil-filled transformer exploded at the Sayano-Shushenskaya power plant in Siberia, destroying three turbines and bringing down the ceiling of the turbine hall, which then violently flooded. It is unclear how many people were killed, but with 12 confirmed deaths and as many as 64 still missing (all presumed dead) this is a serious incident. The rather huge transformer had enough oil in it to produce a three-mile-long oilspill slowly moving downriver. BBC News reports with three seperate videos. The dam produces a quarter of the total energy of RusHydro (whos stock thus took a steep dive at London Stock Exchange) and also feeds the worlds largest aluminium smelter. The damages will take years to repair.
