Comment Turbines en route (Score 4, Interesting) 414

I live is Southern AZ where Interstate 10 runs and a road which I am driving on often. Over the last few months I've noticed a steady flow of "oversize load"s on the freeway that contain rather large wind turbine components heading eastbound, presumably heading to TX from somewhere in CA. Perhaps these are Mr. Pickens, but who knows. Bottom line is there sure have been a lot of these steadily flowing through AZ...

Comment "Ask Slashdot": "safe" browsing in FF?? (Score 1) 174

I want to browse "safely"; protection against most XSS and sh1t like scripts reading my browser history, etc. However, I want the sites that I visit to "work" at the same time. Ya, NoScript is great, but with sites globally disallowed, the Internets are useless.

Can anyone offer some suggestions to reasonably lock down FF where a balance is struck between security and usability??

Comment What's with twitter!? (Score 1) 88

Seriously man, what exactly is the fascination with twitter? Everyone is on twitter and if you want to hang with the "cool kids", OMG, you must be on twitter! Newscasters on twitter, politicians on twitter... all the while I'm saying WTF!?
I have often wondered what the fascination is with these social networking sites. myspace, facebook and now twitter. I don't understand it at all. Does anyone out there have any insight or theory why people blow their load over these sites?? I'd appreciate it. In the mean time, just the phrase "social networking" makes me sick. Yet here I am posting on ./ ... am I being hypocritical? I'm willing to accept if I'm wrong and just being a jackass...

Comment Re:Gravel roads are cheap but need more maintenanc (Score 1) 717

I certainly wouldn't want to try this tactic anywhere out west..

Nonsense! There are plenty of dirt (not gravel) roads here in Arizona, straight and amazingly smooth! I can get up to 80+ MPH on these roads, and why not, usually these roads don't come accompanied with speed limits nor highway patrol.

Granted, the weather is fairly predictable (sunny) and traffic is not very heavy on these roads... still, they are a pleasure to drive and I wish there were more of them!
