Submission + - Duke Nukem Forever delayed again! (gamersleak.com)

Gamersleak writes: "Give Gearbox Software some credit. They had been very firm about Duke Nukem Forever coming out on their May release date. There appeared to be a lot of effort put forth to make sure this game didn’t have any more delays."

Submission + - Password Security Policy

OldSoldier writes: I recently signed up with a company that does background checks for prospective employees. I had forgotten my password (or so I thought) and called them to get a new one. Their email back to me included my original password, NOT a reset one!

This is not the first time this has happened to me. Several years ago I had forgotten my [Wireless Carrier] Account password (who uses those?) and when I was in a Sprint store the clerk happily pulled up my account and told me what it was.

With all the privacy policies that exist and/or are mandated by government regulation I'm stunned that there is no similar legislation for password management. I would think that companies like cell phone companies and this background check company would know better. But more to the point, I'd like to know what the "password policy" of a company was before I am required to create an account on their site.

Submission + - Inside a Verizon Wireless Superswitch

An anonymous reader writes: Geek.com has posted a walkthrough of a Verizon Wireless Superswitch, a 45,000 square foot, $50 million facility. From the article, "The Superswitch we visited, located in Orlando, Fl., is one of about 25 across the US. These control centers are designed to handle mobile calls, SMS, MMS, and mobile broadband for their respective regions. This particular Superswitch faces a somewhat unique problem given it’s unfortunate proximity to extreme weather conditions, and as such is re-enforced to survive a Category 5 hurricane and still provide service to its area. While finite numbers were unavailable, this center handles millions of calls and texts, as well as tens of thousands of gigabytes of mobile data on an average day, and is designed to scale up rapidly for large events or emergencies."

Submission + - Zynga Aiming to Conquer Mobile Next (industrygamers.com)

donniebaseball23 writes: Zynga's presence in mobile gaming is nowhere near its dominance of social gaming on Facebook, but according to chief designer Brian Reynolds, Zynga's looking to change that. "[Mobile] is something that we actively care about, think about. It's the major place where we think the future is," Reynolds told IndustryGamers, adding, "The reason that Zynga isn't ginormous on mobile yet is because the friction of social networking is still high on mobile."

Submission + - Fukushima radioactive fallout nears Chernobyl leve (newscientist.com)

0WaitState writes: The cumulative releases from Fukushima of iodine-131 and cesium-137 have reached 73% and 60% respectively of the amounts released from the 1986 Chernobyl accident. These numbers were reached independently from a monitoring station in Sacramento, CA, and Takasaki, Japan. The iodine and cesium releases are due to the cooking off of the more volatile elements in damaged fuel rods. http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn20285-fukushima-radioactive-fallout-nears-chernobyl-levels.html

Submission + - BYU students develop cloud based ultrasound viewer (byu.edu)

chaseneb writes: A group of BYU information technology students is one of 10 teams to make it to the U.S. software design final of the Imagine Cup, an international technology competition sponsored by Microsoft. The student team landed the coveted spot with a software application that can convert an ultrasound image to a standard image format and store it online for later access.

Submission + - Comcast Trying to Avoid Dubious Title 1

An anonymous reader writes: The folks over at the Consumerist annually now run their "Worst Company in America Tournament", a light-hearted way to allow annoyed consumers to vent some of their accumulated angst. You'll perhaps recall that Comcast won the award last year, going so far as to beat out companies like Ticketmaster and Bank Of America for the "honor."

Eager to avoid a repeat, the Consumerist notes that Comcast has sent out numerous memos urging employees to stuff the ballot box over at the website.

Submission + - New Phase of Matter in SuperConductor (stanford.edu)

unil_1005 writes: "Scientists have found the strongest evidence yet that a puzzling gap in the electronic structures of some high-temperature superconductors could indicate a new phase of matter. Understanding this “pseudogap” has been a 20-year quest for researchers who are trying to control and improve these breakthrough materials, with the ultimate goal of finding superconductors that operate at room temperature."

I can't imagine anything bigger.
