Submission + - France Outlaws Hashed Passwords (bbc.co.uk) 3

An anonymous reader writes: Storing passwords as hashes instead of plain text is now illegal in France, according to a draconian new data retention law. According to the BBC, "[t]he law obliges a range of e-commerce sites, video and music services and webmail providers to keep a host of data on customers. This includes users' full names, postal addresses, telephone numbers and passwords. The data must be handed over to the authorities if demanded." If the law survives a pending legal challenge by Google, Ebay and others, it may well keep some major services out of the country entirely.

Submission + - Jailbreakers Cydia Lands Big Advert Deal (rev2.org)

ideaz writes: Unsanctioned, third-party app provider Cydia – sort of the store for those who don’t use iTunes – has landed a brand deal with Toyota. The advertising deal is the first of its kind, where a major brand goes to a non-conforming provider for marketing. The ads being run are part of Toyota’s advertising campaign to push its iPhone user interface app for select Toyota cars.

Submission + - Help the FBI solve an open murder case (fbi.gov)

JustDisGuy writes: The FBI has hit a dead end. On June 30, 1999, sheriff’s officers in St. Louis, Missouri discovered the body of 41-year-old Ricky McCormick. He had been murdered and dumped in a field. The only clues regarding the homicide were two encrypted notes found in the victim’s pants pockets.

Despite extensive work by our Cryptanalysis and Racketeering Records Unit (CRRU), as well as help from the American Cryptogram Association, the meanings of those two coded notes remain a mystery to this day, and Ricky McCormick’s murderer has yet to face justice.

“We are really good at what we do,” said CRRU chief Dan Olson, “but we could use some help with this one.”

Submission + - Samsung plants keyloggers on laptops it makes (networkworld.com)

Saint Aardvark writes: "Mohammed Hassan writes in Network World that he found a keylogger program installed on his brand-new laptop — not once, but twice. After initial denials, Samsung has admitted they did this, saying it was to "monitor the performance of the machine and to find out how it is being used." As Hassan says, "In other words, Samsung wanted to gather usage data without obtaining consent from laptop owners." Three PR officers from Samsung have so far refused comment."

Sources please? In today's media, it's hard to find the good news.

Umm.... What kind of cars are you buying? Get a car from a decent make, and it'll last a lot longer than 5 years. They're priced competitively, and usually, you get better savings on gas mileage to. You use the example of GM, but if your estimates are correct about engine life, they're the outlier among vehicles.

Submission + - AT&T to introduce broadband caps (dslreports.com)

rekenner writes: In the upcoming weeks, AT&T customers are going to start receiving notices that their broadband services are going to have a monthly cap, starting in May. DSL users will have a cap of 150 GB per month, while U-Verse users will have a more "generous" cap of 250 GB per month. However, unlike other caps, it won't be until your third month of overage, on the life of the account, that you'll be charged an overage. Thanks, I guess.

Submission + - ATT to Cap DSL/U-Verse, Impose Overage Fees 1

theodp writes: AT&T will reportedly implement a 150GB monthly cap on landline DSL customers and a 250GB cap on subscribers to U-Verse high speed internet starting on May 2nd. AT&T will also charge overage fees of $10 for every additional 50GB of data. DSLReports says it has confirmation from AT&T that these rates are legitimate, and that letters will go out to customers starting March 18th. 'We are committed to providing a great experience for all of our Internet customers,' explained AT&T in a statement. 'Customers strongly believe that only those who use the most bandwidth should pay more than those who don't use as much. That's exactly what this does — and again, 98% of our customers will not be impacted by this.' You knew there'd be hell to pay after AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson's compensation slipped 6% to $27.3 million in 2010, didn't you?
