Submission + - MyDeathSpace.com

An anonymous reader writes: I was random link clicking on Wikipedia and after reading the article on Wikipedia:MySpace I noticed a link to Wikipedia:MyDeathSpace.com. Basically, MyDeathSpace.com chronicles the deaths (and occasionaly murders) of MySpace users with a summary and link to an static news article. Not surprisingly, the leading cause of death is driving under the influence of alcohol at "excessive" speeds. The scary trend is that the drivers veered into oncoming traffic.

Submission + - x86 Linux Flash Player 9 is Final

Schlaegel writes: The official Adobe Linux Flash blog has announced that Flash player for x86 Linux is now final and no longer beta. Every x86 Linux user, at least those willing to load binary software, can rejoice and no longer feel like a second rate citizen.

Distribution packages are also available, for example the Macromedia Fedora repository already has the flash player marked for update.

Submission + - New airplane lasers to defend against terrorists

RealGrouchy writes: The Associated press is running a story on Northrop-Grumman lasers being installed on commercial jets, in order to defend from shoulder-fired missiles. Apparently, nine McDonnel-Douglas MD-10s — all cargo jets — will be tested until March 2008, although "the ultimate goal is to defend passenger airliners." If widely implemented, this system would cost $1 million for each of the 6,800 US commercial airliners.

From the article:
"No passenger plane has ever been downed by a shoulder-fired missile outside of a combat zone."
Maybe sharks with frickin' lasers *would* be a better use of tax dollars...

Submission + - Radio Station Fires 10 After Woman's Death

necro81 writes: "Here's a followup to an earlier story. After a mother of three in Sacramento died of water intoxication from a competition to win a Wii console, the radio station sponsoring the contest has fired 10 of its employees, including its three morning DJs. The station, KDND 107.9, has also suspended the 'Morning Rave' show that the contest was featured on."

Submission + - Blu-ray Refutes Claims of Porn Ban...

thefoxtrot writes: " The Blu-ray Disc Association is speaking out against charges that the org is shunning adult video distributors from releasing content on Blu-ray. "The BDA welcomes the participation of all companies interested in using and supporting the format, particularly those from the content industry," said the BDA's Gordon. "We look forward to working with any content providers interested in providing their audience with [the] best possible high definition home entertainment experience." Analysts say that the pornography industry, which generates an estimated $57 billion in annual revenue worldwide, could play an influential role in increasing high-def adaption rates and — especially if forced to choose sides — could help determine an ultimate victor in the high-def format wars."

Submission + - Congress to debate Net Neutrality

evw writes: The NYTimes is reporting that legislation was introduced in the Senate on Tuesday in support of Net Neutrality. It is bipartisan legislation introduced by Olympia Snowe, R-Maine and Byron Dorgan, D-N. Dakota, however the article notes that Senator Snowe is one of the few Republicans that supports it. "Senior lawmakers, emboldened by the recent restrictions on AT&T and the change in control of Congress, have begun drafting legislation that would prevent high-speed Internet companies from charging content providers for priority access."

This isn't the first attempt. Last year a similar amendment was blocked. However, conditions placed on AT&T in its merger with SBC have emboldened supporters of the legislation.

Submission + - Apple's "iTV" launched as Apple TV

deadmantyping writes: At the MacWorld expo Apple revealed its set-top box, the Apple TV. It had been rumored that the Apple TV would not be making an appearance at this MacWorld expo due to operating system quality concerns. From the article: "At its core, the Apple TV is a self-contained hardware solution for Apple's Front Row software that comes with all of the company's 2006-released Macs. The system is very intuitive and easy to use and the actual interface is gorgeous to look at as well, especially on a high-definition display."

Submission + - 109th Congress Illegalizes Pretexting

DJCacophony writes: "In a little-noticed move that affects both corrupt business practices and social engineering (and therefore also private investigation) nationwide, the 109th U.S. Congress opted to illegalize "pretexting", the controversial practice of lying about ones own identity over the phone. The legislation was passed in the 109th Congress' last session, and overrules the decision against similar legislation made less than two weeks earlier by the California legislature after pressure from the MPAA, who had been practicing pretexting as a method for gathering informtion on filesharers. The practice had previously only been illegal in 12 states."
