Are you kidding? The Olympics is a hugely political event. It's not about the medals, it's about beating the U.S. and the West to prove that their way of doing things is better. Just like the U.S.S.R. back in it's day.

They played games in the 2008 Gymnastics competition with their 14^H^H16 year old Gymnasts, so I don't doubt for a second they're playing games now.

If you take that approach, then you can prevent the kind of stupid laws that want to turn universities into more "business-like" entities, if anything they are TOO MUCH like private enterprize already, they OUGHT to operate as a public service. Nobody ever asks if a neighbourhood playground makes MONEY - we just build them because it's better to live in a world with them than a world without them. That is what science should be. A neighbourhood playground.

Good analogy. I like the cut of your jib, sir.

Submission + - Respected US Swim Coach John Leonard Suggest China Using Genetic Manipulation (dailymail.co.uk) 4

doston writes: Top US swimming coach John Leonard, the executive director of the World Swimming Coaches Association, has branded Ye's performance as "unbelievable" and "disturbing" and her speed over the final 50-metres as "flat out impossible".

Leonard told The Guardian that the race brings back memories of Irish swimmer Michelle Smith's four medal win at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996; she was later given a four year ban after failing a drug test.

He added that because she is from China — which has been dogged by swimmers testing positive for performance enhancing drugs in recent years — adds even more suspicion.

He has even suggested that the Chinese could be using genetic manipulation to enhance performances.

Submission + - Number of 'Distracted Walking' Injuries Quadruples

Hugh Pickens writes writes: "The LA Times reports that the number of people who have landed in US emergency rooms thanks to injuries incurred while they were walking and texting, tweeting, playing video games, talking on the phone, or listening to music on headphones, has more than quadrupled in the past seven years with 1,152 people treated in 2011 for distracted walking, a number that is likely a gross underestimate since many doctors or nurses may not have asked whether the patient was using a mobile device at the time of the accident. "We are where we were with cellphone use in cars 10 years or so ago. We knew it was a problem, but we didn't have the data," says Jonathan Atkins, executive director of the Governors Highway Safety Association. Philadelphia officials are drafting a safety campaign that will be aimed in part at pedestrians who are looking at their devices instead of where they're going. "One of the messages will certainly be 'pick your head up' — I want to say 'nitwit,' but I probably shouldn't call them names," says Rina Cutler, deputy mayor for transportation and public utilities. Psychological studies that show most people can't focus on two things at once. Rather, their attention shifts rapidly back and forth between tasks, and performance suffers. But like a lot of drivers who use cellphones behind the wheel, pedestrians often think they're in control and that it's all the other fools on their phones who aren't watching what they're doing. "People really need to be aware that they are impacting their safety by texting or talking on the cellphone" while walking, says Eric Lamberg, author of a study of young people walking and using their cell phones. "I think the risk is there.""

The court stated that Zeidenberg could have rejected the terms of the contract and returned the software.

Good luck finding any software retailer that will allow you to return opened software, of course. Is the manufacturer even legally required to compensate the purchaser in a case such as that? Seems like the consumer is screwed either way...
