My RX480 hit its first problem this year - the Elder Scrolls Online Necrom expansion. There were parts of that where the machine literally just switched off in the middle of the battle at high detail and even medium detail. Forced me back to low res for a bit.

Thing is a GPU upgrade for me would likely trigger a machine upgrade rather than just GPU (Skylake-era i5, can't run Win11), and I just don't see the value for me personally. It's just a games launcher to me, I use other platforms as my home and productivity stuff, I don't play a great range of games the ones I do have been out for a while. Just sort of meh, I can wait.

I'm not sure you're following. OpenJDK and various other builds are completely free, completely open source and completely without restriction.

For some versions of the Oracle-supplied JDK, you need a commercial license. The moment that appeared everyone switched over to OpenJDK and got on with life. There are no restrictions.

I feel it should be a crime to release any electronic device with a clock in it that doesn't do this. Admittedly that's a bit nuclear, but given the number of times I have to keep resetting my cooker and microwave clocks I feel it's justified. Long sentence, custodial only please.

Yep, agreed. And this impacts the future strategy with decreasing power needs how?

There is a definite short term power impact because of the supply of gas, due to the Russia/Ukraine conflict. The medium to long term strategy reduces gas and adds nuclear (Hinkley Point C). This is thought about.

I mean, I literally directed you to the information that the National Grid give. I should add too that I'm interested in this topic and have heard interviews with him on podcasts such as The Fully Charged Show etc. where he's addressed these exact concerns.

To reiterate - they call it Myth 1. Also, you're aware that power usage for the UK is predicted to be coming down, not up right? And that peak power was in the 70s? So saying that couldn't cope in the past...yeah, once again the guy whose literal job it is to think about things like that has thought about it.

Look up the UK Future Energy Scenarios report for more information.

I've been driving an EV in the UK for five years. The charging infrastructure has significantly improved and continues to significantly improve. Could it be better? Of course, but that's been the steady trend for years now. Saying that no-one can switch because things aren't 100% perfect and ideal is just wrong.

Flats? I know two people with EVs and no off-road parking, and I fairly regularly see EVs parked outside on the road too. It's entirely do'able.

Grid? The head of the National Grid doesn't share your concern. Standard stuff - investment needed, but investment is made and it's progressing.

I don't know why these frankly debunked points keep cropping up. Strangely, people like the head of National Grid have already considered all this. Odd that. I mean, on their site your point is literally listed as Myth 1.

I don't like the move and wish hadn't happened, but it's just hot air. UK hasn't moved the date by which 80% of your vehicle production must be zero emission. UK has moved the date by which the "significant portion must be zero", i.e. hybrids. Hybrids are mostly expected to be a tiny fragment by then anyway.

In other words, headline grabbing by the UK government rather than meaningful shift. It's an electoral splash driven by a misguided reaction to a local by-election result here, which Labour lost primarily due to opposition on the expansion of the ultra-low emissions zone in London. I wish they hadn't done it, but..it's not as dire as they might have made it.
