My best friend whines that is why he has not kept up with our little book club we started when we were undergrads. " If you drove an hour each way, you would not want to come home and read either - blah blah blah, blah." His wife is in grad school, takes care of their 2 year old and works weekends at the co-op and she keeps up. He works 8 hours a day and whines.

45 minutes is easy to time to find, if you make a ritual out of it when you get home or when you first wake up. Stop reading news in the morning and read a book that won't try to enchant you with LiLo's or the Dow's up and downs.

IBM did not really ween itself off the government tit till the 1970's and it is slowly but surely returning to it. All electronics manufacturing, save for a few consumer only companies in the US relied on government contracts, R&D deals and trickle down military technology to prosper in the post WWII era. Since Ike established DARPA in 1958, it has been involved in everything from rockets to pacemakers to Artificial Intelligence. Until places like Xerox Parc in the late 70's there was no civilian equivalent that across so many industries since Edison's Menlo Park.

The problem with the Flynn effect is that it does not account for the decreased usage of IQ tests in schools, employment and the military - which constituted the vast majority of usage. When color TVs became affordable for the consumer market and television programs started broadcasting in color the amount of garish costumes and set designs and other "look ma, its in color" gaucherie was lampooned mercilessly. The technology was refined and eventually turned out alright, even though it went through a stage at the advent of color when it verged on the psychedelic.

Discounting 3D at this stage of the technology is a patently absurd prognostication given the history of the TV.
