Submission + - Gmail accounts hacked - no response from Google (livejournal.com)

jared51 writes: A few friends have recently had their Gmail accounts hacked, causing immense life complications. With Gmail storing all information (many people have a handy label "Accounts" making life easier) that has ever been emailed, a hijacker can easily move on to eBay, PayPal and credit card accounts to turn the crime into cash. Making matters worse, Google is impossible to contact by human. Hijacked users must contend with an endless series of forms.

Submission + - What language should game art students be taught?

An anonymous reader writes: My college started offering a degree in Game Art & Design around a year and half ago, my classmates and I are the first ones through, so we are basically the guinea pigs in their little experiment. We have recently discovered that for a scripting language, the school plans to teach ActionScript. We have already taken one programming class (logic and fundamentals) and are taking a C++ course now. The two scripting classes are a ways off, but my classmates and I are trying to pressure the school to change the language to something a bit more useful in game development. Flash games are great, but we would like something a bit more general, like Lua, Python, Ruby, etc. Sure, we have some ideas, but I figured I would ask slashdot for some help. SO the question, what language do you think we should learn, and, any tips on getting our school to listen to us? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Submission + - Modder Creates Xbox 360 Tilt Controller

Peter F writes: "Adam Thole, a Electrical & Computer Engineering student, has modified an Xbox 360 controller to make one of the analog sticks controlled by the tilting motion of the controller. Instead of moving the left analog stick, this mod allows you to tilt the controller forward, backward, left or right. The mod uses a two-axis accelerometer that measures the left/right and up/down tilt, which is determined by measuring the force of gravity on the axis. The only part of the left analog stick that works after the modification is the button...

Submission + - The Death of Domain Parking

Anonymous Coward writes: "Is Richard Rosenblatt, the former MySpace CEO, about to revolutionize the domain industry? Quote: "I thought, it can't be that easy. So I talked to some domainers, and they said, 'We own 300,000 domains, we make $20 million a year, we have just four employees and some servers in the Caymans.'" Rosenblatt wants to use millions of currently unused domains to create a new vertical Web 2.0 empire.

Submission + - Is Solaris a bright choice for developers?

anilg writes: "The register writes about the emergence of solaris as a Developer platform

So, why wouldn't you use OpenSolaris as your developer desktop, perhaps to work up "proofs of concept" in your own time — to sell to your CIO and thus help to develop your career. I'd be interested in reader feedback as to why any people thinking of Linux aren't also thinking of OpenSolaris. Or perhaps they are...
With Sun studio with sun's compilers and Java, Sun is looking to open itself to developers. And, its giving away DVDs! FD : anilg works on LiveUSB and BeleniX, an opensolaris distribution, in his spare time."

Submission + - Clever Garbage Disposal methods

Grumbeys writes: "So after a recent college visit i realized that garbage just tends to accumulate in any space of living, pretty much no matter how often you clean. So i thought, perhaps there is a lazy mans way to avoid this constant picking up of beer cans and such. Something that involves a few of the following -A wet/dry vac on reverse -Some tubing of some sort, either pbc or duct i'm assuming. my plan is to construct a device that will allow one to throw garbage into a vat and have the garbage propelled by the wet/dry vac into a large garbage container far away from the living quarters. I need some ideas, and comments. could this work or can i not get enough propulsion from a wet/dry vac.."

Submission + - Laptop Cooling - A Worst Case Scenario

Jim Richmond writes: "After experiencing frequent cpu slow downs on my Dell Inspiron 9100 Laptop, I went frantically searching for fixes. The fix: the fan exhaust vents were severely clogged. Included are some pictures to show just how extreme a case it was. I half-jokingly wonder if this would of caused my laptop battery to explode.

Submission + - Microsoft laptop recipient auctioning laptop

Salvance writes: "While most bloggers who received the controversial Vista powered Acer from Microsoft are keeping them, Laughing Squid has decided to auction off his free laptop from Microsoft and donate all proceeds to the The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). He saw this as a great opportunity to support a worthy cause, and some other bloggers are following suit.

What's both ironic and funny is that Microsoft is now backpedaling and telling bloggers to send back the laptops. Do they even have a legal right to do so?"

Submission + - Statements at Boycott Blackboard Site Vanish

Resident M. Turdstile writes: "As of Thursday. December 28th, 2006, statements from users opposed to the Blackboard Patent have mysteriously vanished from the Boycott Blackboard online petition site. Statements of opposition included developers of online instructional technology who took issue with what they perceived to be Blackboard's hijacking of prior art in their patent filing. Others pointed out that Blackboard was in fact interested in maintaining an intellectual monopoly on online instructional technology and course management, contradicting claims by legal council that Blackboard only wants to protect its intellectual property. Readers who wish to see a Google cache of some of the responses of petition signers may click here."
