Comment Older Consoles For The (Cheap) Win! (Score 1) 89

I am always at least one generation behind on gaming consoles. For example, I have a PS/2, an original Wii and an Xbox 360 - all purchased used. I can go to GameStop and pick up dozens of games for my Xbox 360 for less than $5 each. Hell, I only paid around $100 for my 360 last year - there is no way I'm going to spend almost that much on ONE GAME, especially for an f'ing annual sports title release. Y'all keep buying those new generations of consoles and games, and three years from now when you're bored with them, let me know and I'll take them off your hands for pennies on the dollar...

let's say you take 50% of the money from the top 1% of the USA to pay for stuff. Then the next year you come back to take another 50%.

How many years before there isn't enough left in the top 1% to pay for all of your free stuff? Especially after the 1% gets smart and starts moving their money offshore, or putting it in investments that can't be easily taxed?

Then who is going to pay for all of the "free" stuff?

I have multiple independent phone repair stores within a few miles drive of my home. I live in rural Iowa, so a trip to an Apple store is a much lengthier affair which will use more gasoline, produce more pollutants and result in a total cost between 2x and 10x of what a local repair store will charge for the same work.

I've never understood how any TV network thinks this is ever a good idea (and I say that having worked for the local FOX affiliate for a couple of years).

Advertising rates are determined based on a combination of how many viewers you can claim you have and your Nielson ratings. It costs a TV station virtually NOTHING to allow a satellite or cable company to re-transmit their signal. In return, the station then gets to claim that all of the satellite/cable subscribers in their DMA (Designated Media Area) are now potential viewers as well which increases their base advertising rates. Again - there is NO COST TO THE NETWORK/STATION to allow this to happen.

However, stations/networks got used to receiving that amount of free money every month/quarter/year and then they get greedy and start demanding more money for a service that BENEFITS THEM FAR MORE THAN THE re-transmission fees ever could and we, the consumers/viewers, end up with the short end of the stick as both companies complain that the other company is being unreasonable and cheap/greedy. They broadcast warnings that their network/station will no longer appear on cable/satellite and to call your cable/satellite company and tell them that you want this station to stay on their service! They actually expect the consumers to do their negotiating for them...

From my perspective, I pay for YouTube Red and get Google Play Music as a free bonus. I watch a LOT of YouTube videos on my TV and not having to sit through the same boring commercials every time I start a new video was worth the $9.95/mo. Then I bought a Google Home device last year and got 6 months for free of both - it finally ran out and I'm back to having to pay for it. It is worth it, in my opinion. I don't stream that much music, so I wouldn't pay for just a music streaming service...
