Comment Email? Don't care about the other stuff (Score 1) 44

I own several domains and I'll admit that I went a bit wild registering all of them for free G Suite accounts.
I only care about 2, maybe 3. One's my personal domain and the other my business but I'm the only user on either.
The 3rd I setup for my parents but now it's just my mum and she won't care if I change her email address.
I don't use any of the apps I just use G Suite for email accounts.
GMail is pretty good for spam filtering which is my only needed really.
Now I'm thinking of moving to Apple's domain hosting email but I'm interested in hearing about anything else that's worth investigating?
Just like Apple is offering it would seem smart for Google to offer a domain hosting GMail limited to a max of several email addresses per domain for families.
Suggestions for good domain hosting email providers?

Comment Subtitles (Score 1) 333

I opened the link and watched the video about these guns. For some reason the subtitles were on.

Got a laugh when the guy was demo-ing the gun and going through the 3 authentication methods.
On the 3rd one he said (59secs) "you know, belly or bluetooth". Eh?

Took me a a moment to realise what he'd actually said was "BLE or bluetooth".
Are youtube subtitles machine generated? Or maybe just a non-tech subtitle writer.

Comment Nepomniachtchi threw it away (Score 4, Interesting) 42

Game 5 was epic. Both were exhausted after one of the longest final games ever. It ended in a draw.
From then on Nepomniachtchi crumbled. Made an awful mistake in game 6 allowing his Bishop to get pinned and taken.
If you watch the video of the game you can see Magnus shaking his head in disbelief after studying it to see where the non-obvious advantage to that move was and realising there was none.
Game 7 was a draw with Magus playing black but Magnus won game 8 as white and then game 9 as black.
Game 10 another draw with Magnus winning as black the final game 11 when Nepomniachtchi blundered again.
Commentators felt Nepomniachtchi had effectively given up or lost interest by the final game.
Takes nothing away from Magnus and I can't wait to see if he retains both World Rapid and Blitz Championships.

Aspirin, that extremely low cost, generic drug that been around for ever being pushed aside for....?
I'm being cynical, I know, but it's a simple fact that where there's money to be made, and really good money, decisions and policies can be bought and researchers need patrons.
Here in New Zealand we had a referendum on legalising weed and the "No" campaign was funded by pharma. It won.
Another cheap drug that is just a bit too inconveniently useful with multiple applications to have allowed.
I wish I lived in a world where I could believe everything that "medical organizations and federal agencies" put out.
I blame this distrust on why so many have ignored government and medical advice on CV19 and the various vaccines.
When you really need the public to believe you, and they refuse, you only have your past corruptions, and self interests, to blame.
I'm vaccinated with Pfizer and I will continue to use aspirin.

Submission + - Ring cancels desktop Apps for Windows & Mac. Web App Chrome/Edge only. (ring.com)

seoras writes: Ring has just announced to users of its popular desktop apps for Windows and Mac that "On October 15, 2021, the Ring desktop app for Windows and Mac will be discontinued. All users will be permanently logged out of the Ring — Always Home desktop app".
They then go on to stay that "Key features from the desktop app are available on ring.com, including Live View and Browser Notifications (coming soon)."
What they don't tell you on that support page announcement is that their browser Live View is only available on Chrome and Edge.
The 2 browsers that aren't actively working to block tracking.
If you use Safari, Firefox or any other browser you have no option but to use Chrome or Edge on the desktop or revert to your mobile Ring app.
A cynical attempt to push more users onto web browsers that enable Amazon and Google to better track them?

Comment Apple's Future Wireless Silicon (Score 1) 70

Adding LEO satellite comms makes the process of getting Apple's own 3/4/5G silicon into iPhones all the more complicated.
It wouldn't be a good look if the iPhone 13 & 14 had LEO satellite support but the iPhone 15 or 16 had to drop it.
Apple can really only add additional comms tech into current iPhones features that they are confident their own in house silicon guys can replicate.

Haven't studied physics beyond high school, so go easy on me here, but if something consumes something else without changing size then it sounds like a sink hole.
Maybe that image comes to my mind from the various visual representations I've seen around of black holes that illustrate how they bend space time.
Is that a correct assumption and can someone who knows more elaborate please? Thanks!

Comment Predators (Score 5, Insightful) 75

When a predator dies off isn't it usually because of a collapse in prey population and food source?
If not wouldn't there be a proportional rise, or spike, in whatever sharks were munching on then?
Or is the shark population's impact on the fish population negligible normally?
What I've read only talks about the fish teeth to shark denticles ratios but not the actual numbers.
Unless I've missed something? Anyone got access to the full paper?
Interesting article but it feels like there must be more to this than just the sharks.

Comment Not an original idea, BASF already have a product (Score 1) 35

Miniaturisation of lab equipment like spectrum analysers (e.g NIR) combined with advances in Machine Learning and AI is making this a very interesting new area for investment in R&D.
BASF already have a product in the market which does much the same thing.
Their analyser is a bit bulky but the hand held NIR scanners are shrinking rapidly not only in size but also cost.
I know of one NIR sensor that sells in volume amounts for around $5 and can fit in a smart phone.
A bit like putting LIDAR in smart phones, or tablets like Apple is doing, this is still early days in terms of software and applications
Here's another company that has worked on a wide range of applications of this technology and commercialised some of them successfully.

You can just make out a thin black shadow on the ground coming from the side of the building.
That's the pole that was moved up against the building, out of the way.
It's original location was at the corner edge of that concrete the shadow is lying on.

Now scroll down and you'll see another pole shadow at the edge of the field.
The layout was a bit different back in the 80's but next to that pole was where the metal gate, and cow, was.
The farm is closer to Glasgow but it sits just within the boundaries of EK and gets its power from there.
