McKinnon stands accused of hacking into US systems 97 times, causing millions of dollars worth of damage. McKinnon claims he was merely looking for evidence of aliens - though he doesn't deny the hacking charges. If convicted he could face 70 years in jail.

If the Aspergers defense doesn't work he could always try for insanity in the U.S!

Very interesting you mention that.... it was common practice for people using a BBS or 2 where I live to "ANSI BOMB" the bbs -- they would put the modem hangup chars into specially crafted ANSI messages. I was nice because the NFO for the file you were downloading looked pretty until your 9600 Baud modem hung up on you before you could download your ARJ files!! :P

Submission + - Irelands Main ISP under possible DNS attack (softpedia.com)

Users have EIRCOMs services have had a variety of problems from slow queries for websites, being redirected to advertising sites from known urls, and generally slow service.

EIRCOM officials released the following statement (from http://support.eircom.net/)

(Issued Tue, 14th July 2009) Last night eircom.net customers experienced significant congestion while browsing the web.

While it is too early to confirm, eircom believes that it is related to an unprecedented volume of traffic deliberately directed at our network, which has caused difficulties for customers over recent days.

Service has been restored to our customers since late last night. Our technical specialists have been and will continue to work around the clock to determine the source of the problem.

eircom has been in contact with other operators in the Irish market to collaborate and pool technical expertise in this area. We will keep our customers advised with regular updates.

I used to wait anxiously each year for the demoscene to release it's winners and top demos. I would hit the ftp.cdrom.com archives (where they tended to dump everything in the day) and download all the demos on my 9600 baud modem.

The 4k demos and the much larger DEMOS were amazing -- it was cool to see what people could do with a bit of assembly language or C

Comment Shape My Traffic (Score 1) 291

Shape my traffic - seriously - I HAVE NO BANDWIDTH ANYWAY - in Canada I've given up an arm, a leg, my right eye, and a kidney for 15Mbit -- most of the time this is reliable and I can get UP TO that speed and when I am getting that speed it is usually trying to download something from Netflix or update my Linux Iso's.

I am sick and tired of Canadian ISP's providing crap for bandwidth - overcharging for this bandwidth - then complaining when I use it.

From what I've read in previous comments it's that this survey is more alarmist than anything. "hey you know your neighbor is downloading movies off of the internet, which makes your internet slower. how would you feel if we made his internet slower so you can get your mail faster".

here is some information from Canadian providers -- none of them specifically state what information they will or will not provide when requested or what is specifically logged. I have excluded TELUS because they are wh0r3ish and don't listen anyway.
