I don't thing you understand what he meant. He's suggesting orienting the plant opposite the normal configuration, with the soil and roots system being closer to the central axis, with the leafy portions of the plant growing out, away from the central axis. The problem with this is that you can't really completely eliminate the effects of gravity. If the centrifuge is spinning horizontally, you still have gravity pulling the plants sideways, and if you set it up vertically, you may be able to get and average of 1/6 gravity, but not a constant 1/6g, as you'll actually be increasing the acceleration when the centrifuge is going down.

British Columbia To Charge Recycling Fee 172

An anonymous reader writes "Next week the province of British Columbia will begin adding a recycling fee to new computers and TVs to pay for their free electronics recycling program. The list of what is acceptable for recycling is short, namely computers, printers, and TVs — you cannot recycle personal audio players or cell phones. What is unclear is whether the definition of 'desktop computer' includes self-built computers, and if so, their plans for adding fees for individual components such as motherboards, etc." The article notes that the recovered e-waste will not be sent to developing countries for processing. But one report says that the e-waste won't be recycled at all, but rather burned in a smelter.

yuna49 writes: Various people are reporting that the MS07-040 patch for .NET released on Tuesday can cause a variety of seemingly unrelated problems. According to the SANS Internet Storm Center "the reports we got so far seem not to lead to any specific thing that happens in many cases, just various things going haywire." Some commentators on The Register's report of this story indicate that the patch failed to install at all, while others report things like the mouse suddenly failing to work or long periods of hard drive thrashing. In some cases a hard reboot seems to fix the problem, but other reports suggest that a reinstallation of the .NET framework itself is required. The problems may be related to the MSCORSVW.EXE process which recompiles all the .NET assemblies when the patch is downloaded. While the recompilations are supposed to run as a background task, in some instances the recompilation will drive the processor to 100% usage.

penguin_dance writes: Slashdotters will have some obvious fun with the idea that Prince is giving away his latest CD with the Sunday Mail, but what's really funny is how music industry and retailers are in a snit about it. (This is hardly J.K. Rowling giving away the 7th Harry Potter book.)

Prince also plans to give away copies of the CD with each concert ticked sold. Imagine, another artist taking control of their music! I think even those who are better known find they make more money from the concerts and t-shirt sales than from the tiny amount of royalties on CDs. Giveaways generate excitement, get out songs that aren't being played on the radio (what's the last song you've heard by Prince — probably "1999" or "Red Corvette") and basically create fan good will that they've essentially 'open-sourced' their music.

An anonymous reader writes: Troy Anthony Davis is scheduled to be executed in Georgia at 7pm local time on 17 July. He has been on death row for more than 15 years for the murder of a police officer which he maintains he did not commit. There have been many irregularities with the trial. Many of the witnesses presented by the prosecution at the trial have since recanted or contradicted their testimony. There has also been widespread reports of witnesses (including one of the alleged victims, a homeless man) being verbally and physically assaulted by police into providing false testimony. Surprisingly, there has been little news coverage of this story in the US, although it was picked up by France's Le Monde. Could it be because of shame in the high error rate of this system?

In the agreement, a clone product is broadly defined as "a product (or major component thereof) of a Party that has the same or substantially the same features and functionality as a then-existing product (or major component thereof) of the other Party ... and that has the same or substantially the same user interface, or implements all or substantially all of the Application Programming Interfaces of the Prior Product." The text of the clone product definition subsections is very cumbersome to read, but it specifically mentions OpenOffice, Wine, and OpenXchange by name without asserting that they are necessarily clone products.

Sure there are hardcore female gamers out there but the fact of the matter is most male gamers have girlfriends and wives that just can't be bothered with space marines, gun fights, and racing sims. Growing up with the NES, the Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis many people from my generation enjoy simple, classic gaming. My girlfriend is no exception. She enjoys games that she can learn quickly, are challenging and don't involve killing people. I have contemplated buying entirely new game systems (i.e. the Wii) with the hope that at least one game for that system is appealing to her so we can play together. What modern, non-violent games and systems does the Slashdot community recommend for a girlfriend of a gaming nerd?
