It's not just a trend, it's now a law.
It's not just a trend, it's now a law.
You also have an open sewer instead of a forum.
Host your own ads instead of trusting a third party won't insert something malicious deliberately or through incompetence.
How does the publisher of a newly launched website go about seeking advertisers to advertise on that website without going through a network or exchange?
About 13 years ago, as a long-time C++ developer, I was asked to revamp a complex order form written in Excel, using VBA. It was a weird experience because it was like time-travelling back to about 1990, in terms of programming capabilities. Needless to say, after working on that for a few months, I wouldn't trust Excel for my lemonade stand, leave alone anything important. It is crazily unstable.
Javascript is great to make a web page slicker but should not be needed just to see it.
How would you make, say, an IRC to HTTP proxy without JavaScript? Would it be practical to require the user to periodically press F5 to refresh the view of the channel to check for new messages sent to the channel?
As a general rule, if your site breaks because of that I go somewhere else.
Is gracefully falling back to a subscription prompt considered "breaking"? Otherwise, if every viewer were to block ads, how would a website's writers continue to eat?
20-30 MB of downloads happen in a flash on modern broadband anyways so I don't see this as a problem.
20 to 30 MB per page in a flash is a good way to blow through your monthly mobile Internet data transfer quota in a day, leaving you without mobile Internet access for 29 days until your cap resets.
The bloat is amazing, devs see no reason to optimize as everyone is on 4G/LTE mobile or 100mbit connections so data transfer isn't a concern.
Do users on 4G/LTE mobile stop visiting your site when they run out of Internet data transfer quota for the month?
Since ads pay for the pages, I am not sure what we can really do.
Some hardliners on this site have recommended that viewers stop patronizing websites run as a business and start patronizing more websites run by the public sector, by charities, or by enthusiasts as a hobby out of said enthusiasts' own pocket. What makes this practical or impractical?
bandwidth to the user is up 100 to 1000 times.
Is that per second or per month? I'm under the impression that a lot of people are still stuck on satellite or cellular Internet access with a monthly Internet data transfer quota in low double digit gigabytes or even in the single digit gigabytes.
Google Search used to offer a way to save what amounted to a list of -site: clauses to your Google Account for automatic use in each subsequent query. This feature no longer exists.
R. Edward "Ted" Cruz and N. Nikki Haley are as legitimate as H. Ross Perot and W. Mitt Romney. But then again, if Cruz's first name is Rafael, that makes him a Ninja Turtle's namesake.
Google Play Services on Android required a Gmail account prior to about 2012. Logging in with a Google Account at a non-Gmail domain produced an error message "user@example.com does not use Gmail" with an offer to create a new Gmail account. Since Android Market was renamed to Google Play Store, any Google Account has been usable, even Google Accounts associated with a non-Gmail address.
Hello, fellow 5-digit Slashdotter. I, too, have also not moved on.
I do participate in Reddit a lot, but I think it's an absolute garbage company. However, there are some really good communities to be found if you dig a bit.
I can't imagine how it could possibly be a good investment.
Nor do the alleged "lazy computer users of today" have to endure "Sorry, this application isn't available for your device's operating system yet" while waiting for the application to become popular enough for the application's publisher to make five different versions for five different operating systems.
In the alternative: How common is it for people to carry both an Android-powered phone to run native apps from Google Play Store and an iPhone to run native apps from Apple's App Store?
There are two ways to write error-free programs; only the third one works.
