Submission + - Vista vs. the Gibbon 4

ricegf writes: If you had 7 computers running various versions of Windows and Linux, on which machine would you choose to do most of your work? Rupert Goodwins describes his experience thus: 'So here's the funny thing. I've used Windows since 1.0. I've lived through the bad times of Windows/386 and ME, and the good times of NT 3.51 and 2K. I know XP if not backwards, then with a degree of familiarity that only middle-aged co-dependents can afford each other. Then how come I'm so much more at home with Ubuntu than Vista?'

Google to Anonymize Users' Search Data 151

Google's official blog states they are on an effort to anonymize their search data after 18-24 months. After previously fighting turning over search data to the feds, it looks like they are striking another blow to the "think of the children" crowd. Any bets on whether MSN or Yahoo! will follow suit?

Vista Followup Already in the Works 482

DesertBlade passed us an InfoWorld article, which has the news that Microsoft is already hard at work on the next version of Windows ... and we may see it as early as 2009. Possibly codenamed Vienna, the next Windows iteration will be coming a brief two and a half years after Vista's launch. This is the same timeframe Microsoft claims it would have utilized for Vista, had they not put Longhorn 'on the back burner' to deal with security issues in XP. Corporate Vice President of Development Ben Fathi is already discussing features for the next OS: "We're going to look at a fundamental piece of enabling technology. Maybe its hypervisors, I don't know what it is ... Maybe it's a new user interface paradigm for consumers. It's too early for me to talk about it ... But over the next few months I think you're going to start hearing more and more."

The Man Behind Google Artwork 117

malyn writes "CNN has an article on the artist who designs the custom Google logos for holidays, special events, etc. From the article: '[Dennis Hwang] has been manipulating the six letters in the Google name into shamrocks, fireworks, hearts and goblins since shortly after he got an internship there in 2000. Company founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin found out that he was an art major in college. They said "Hey Dennis, why don't you give this a shot,"' and he has been doing it ever since."

Journal Journal: Linux Power Tools Quickstart 3

... from a course "Power Linux User Quickstart" :)

Postfix is not a tool - it's a server software. Gnome is not a tool either - it's a windowing/desktop environment.

Tools is what you use to fix something or to build something.

Here is my list of Linux Power Tools:

I thouth to answer on this comment, but then decided that it would be too offopic. This subject is too big. I'd better save it for bigger battles.

As a Linux user I've been sufferring from being stuck to Xfree86 for too many long years. That's why my previous irony was so sad.

Microsoft

Journal Journal: Microsoft quotes

I like this collection of misleading quotes from Microsoft, from Bill Gates and about Microsoft.

My favorite ones:

Journal Journal: Some alternatives to ant/make

Some alternatives to ant/make are

  • cook [auug.org.au] (probably the best contender),
  • Mk [pzi.net] (which is like bitkeeper+make),
  • Jam [freetype.org],
  • cake [mu.oz.au] (does anyone use this any more?), and
  • the Plan 9
Books

Journal Journal: TeX books online

That's, library for those who aren't familiar with this wonderful site.

It lists a number of other out-of-print books which're of interest to geeks (and some which are in print such as the .tex source (which one may not process save under specific circumstances) for _The TeXBook_ and _The METAFONT Book_ by Dr. Donald E. Knuth). Books of interest include:
