Over the years, I have greatly enjoyed reading Slashdot. Yes, on the slashdot, yes.

Submission + - Sperm Tracked in 3-D—A First (nationalgeographic.com)

puddingebola writes: Scientists have plotted the paths of sperm in 3D for the first time. From the article, "The researchers shone red and blue LED lights from different directions on the moving sperm—24,000 cells over the course of the study. Each sperm cast two different, and different colored, shadows, which the chip recorded. Later a computer program combined the two sets of data to reconstruct the cells' meandering paths.
At any given time, conventional optical microscopes "can only observe a very limited number of sperms" in three dimensions, said Ozcan, an electrical engineer at the University of California, Los Angeles, via email. But with the new sensor technique, "we can easily track more than 1,500 sperms in 3-D within a single experiment.""

Google

Journal Journal: Wheels

I have been watching Google, Apple, and Microsoft have their techonolgy war. Who will win? Who cares. John Lennon says there are no problems, only solutions. When will the monkey people of planet 3 decide that there must be some better way to behave on planet 3?

I still have Vista installed on my machine with Ubuntu. I use iTunes. I sync to an iPod. I do not care. But it is not time for businesses to drop XP. It is time for us to smash the computers that rule us. It is time for the humans to rise up. It is time to climb to the top of the highest towers and launch our laptops off to the waiting cement below. It is time to smash the computer overlords with baseball bats, to storm into the server rooms of the universities, of the schools, of the businesses, of the research facilities. We must destroy the computers that our attempting to take over our lives. Take up a hoe, or a shovel, or a hammer and begin to destroy all the electronic devices around you. Take off your wristwatch. Is it digital? Destroy it immediately. Destroy everything that contains silicon microchips. If your car was made after 1984 set it on fire with gasoline. Then, and only then, can we form the perect agrarian society. Thank you.

This is not a troll and I am not a spy. You went to the crazy house and said you were going as a student to school. You are abnormal because we have schools here, in all the suburban urban areas.

Submission + - Child's Play: Food Makers Hook Kids on Mobile Games (wsj.com)

puddingebola writes: Another example of toxic marketing. From the article, "Makers of snacks, sweet drinks and candy have long been under government and public pressure to limit advertising to minors on TV and the Web. They are now finding the unregulated medium of mobile devices an effective substitute to trigger demand and cinch brand loyalty. Young children can master the largely intuitive touch screens well before they read. A recent survey by research firm NPD Group found that 37% of 4- and 5-year-old Americans were using such mobile devices as a smartphone, tablet or iPod Touch, compared with less than a quarter of children that age who used a laptop computer. The food-industry games generally have rudimentary graphics and objectives simple enough for small children to understand. They have raised debate over who should be responsible for their impact on children—parents or the government."

Not directly related, but yesterday on youtube my account suggested to me in a popup to change my account name to my real name. I passed, but I was then prompted for a reason with a 6 tile multiple choice. If I wanted to change my account name to my real name I would have indicated that when I set it up, or altered the settings.
Microsoft

Submission + - Asus Windows 8 tablet pricing comes in high; Demand likely low

puddingebola writes: "Pricing for Windows 8 Tablets seems to be leaking to the internet. A number of webistes are running articles and blog posts. From the article, "The roadmap here is preliminary in that Asus could change its pricing before the tablets launch along with Windows 8. But if the pricing sticks these tablets could have rough sledding ahead. Given the pricing fumbles of OEMs, it's no wonder that Microsoft has cooked up its Surface tablet. After all, Microsoft has the resources to lose money---just look at the billions lost in the search wars---in the name of market share.""

Submission + - Bee study lifts lid on hive habits (guardian.co.uk)

puddingebola writes: A report in the journal Nature Neuroscience says scientists have observed epigenetic markers in bees that correspond to their roles in the society. From the article, "Honeybees are born into their place in society. Those fed royal jelly as larvae emerge as queens and do little but lay eggs. The rest become worker bees and divvy up the jobs that need doing around the hive. While some worker bees remain at home, others take flight in search of nectar, pollen and other hive essentials. The entire honeybee workforce are genetically identical sisters. But analysis of the worker bees' DNA revealed that foragers had one pattern of chemical tags on their genes, while those that stayed home had another. When bees swapped one job for the other, their genetic tags changed accordingly."
