After 2010, Mpeg-4 fees are increasing to include "internet broadcast fees" which apply when distributing Mpeg-4 content on the internet. This means that if I host my own Mpeg-4 clip on my own site, I owe an additional fee depending on how many times the clip is downloaded (for clips over 12 minutes)

Would a playlist be able to get around this?

Say I have a video 30 minutes long but I split it into three 10 minute clips. In the flash player (or perhaps with javascript and the video tag) I implement a playlist feature that plays clips immediately after one another and put all 3 sections into one playlist. Would that avoid the higher fees?

Right now, the overwhelming majority clearly oppose the creation of a liberal Western democracy. The Iranians love a brutal Islamic theocracy.

While it's (probably) true that a lot of Iranians support the current government, I don't think you can say the "overwhelming majority" support it. The current situation proves this -- the people are pissed. They tried to do it the right way and they still got screwed by, what seems to be, a rigged election.

I am done with Verizon and their crippled phones. Why would anybody want a crippled Pre? I sure don't.

I'm on Verizon and I'm no fan of their crippling and putting BREW on their normal phones. I had the Razr for awhile and one of the first things I did to it was flash the firmware to the Alltel version to get rid of the nasty Verizon firmware.

But I recently got a Blackberry Curve and I'm not aware of much that's crippled on here, and there's no BREW. I was skeptical at first but I tried out the phone they had in the store and read up online a bit and I was suprised. I don't think they cripple their smartphones much, if at all.

The only thing that I have noticed is that they won't allow the GPS to work with Google Maps, but I can use it with the Blackberry Maps program (free, I'm not signed up for VZ Navigator). I did read that they allowed Google Maps to work on the Storm but I don't know if they're going to extend that their other Blackberry models.

Other than that I can do as much on this phone as any other Blackberry. Easy to load software to it. I've loaded an SSH program, an AIM program (doesn't use SMS, so it's part of the data plan), Opera, and Google Maps does work but only gets an estimated location from the cell towers. I have no problems using it as a mass storage device when I plug it in to my computer either.

Anyone have info on dat?

Sure, but I'm not sure what it has to do with this article:

.DAT File - Data File
Generic data file created by a specific application and typically accessed only by that application; may contain data in text or binary format; text-based DAT files can be viewed in a text editor.

Many programs create, open, or reference DAT files; some examples include:
Microsoft Visual Studio, Corel WordPerfect, Nero ShowTime, Nullsoft Winamp, SoftVelocity Clarion, Ontrack EasyRecovery, Runtime GetDataBack, and MapInfo software.

and for on topic: I've never heard of that court case but it doesn't seem much different than just clicking through. The only thing it adds is forcing you to scroll the box but they still write them legalese that slowly drives you insane.

Submission + - RSA Broken? (liveammo.com)

liveammo writes: "This is a factoring attack against RSA with an up to 80% reduction in the search candidates required for a conventional brute force key attack, and affects any cryptosystem that uses modular arithmetic including the RSA encryption algorithm, potentially symmetric ciphers such as DES which use modular multiplication and addition rounds for diffusion, and even reduction of entropy attacks against PRNG functions such as those that are used to seed TCP/IP Initial Sequence Numbers (ISNs) and DNS servers for example. Sample Erlang proof of concept factoring code is included at the end of this post, and implements the attack against the prime number multiplication process in RSA so that security enthusiasts and armchair cryptographers alike can experiment with and validate these findings. For lack of a more descriptive term and in keeping with the field of cryptanalysis' somewhat arcane nomenclature, I am referring to this attack method as a "Reduction Sieve"."

Submission + - Recovering cell phone video of police killing 2

belmolis writes: "Vancouver police recently shot and killed a man whom they claim was advancing aggressively. Bystander Adam Smolcic says that he recorded the incident on his cell phone and contradicts the police account. He reports that shortly after the incident, a police officer took his phone and examined it for several minutes. When he returned it, the video was gone. The British Columbia Civil Liberties Association reports that the three data recovery firms that it has had examine the phone have been unable to recover the video or to confirm or deny whether it was ever present.

How difficult is it to recover a freshly erased video from a cell phone? Should it be possible to tell whether it was present but erased?"

But the nice part about Squared is you can add and remove any results you want, as well as columns of information.

You can also choose from various values for each data point, though at the moment this part seems a little limited. It would be nice to able select from more choices (maybe dynamically added as requested like other parts of the app).

I think you mean Network Solutions, and I'm not sure they do it anymore. Like my sibling poster, I've also dealt with godaddy and haven't had any problems. In fact, it seems the president of GoDaddy is outwardly against the idea and was calling for it to end.
