Excuse me? What backwater third-world country do you live in? The longest power outage I had in the last 2-3 decades was about 2-3 hours, and that was during a thunderstorm (that end-of-the-world kind). And I've never been in my life without fresh tap water (in perfect drinking quality, I may add).
Ok, I live in the dreaded socialist states of Europe, YMMD in the land of the free...
Lying by omission, actually. I.e. what you get from the big media outlets, too.
Maybe, but the mail doesn't cost more 'cause it goes to my aunt Emma instead of the billing department of the power company next to her.
Charging more is not the problem. The problem is that the proposed model creates a two tier internet. The internet of the big companies that can afford the fee and thrive, and the internet of "us peasants" that will suffer.
Essentially, what it boils down to, is that they want to do to the internet what happened to other media: You will only be heard if you have the money. And last time I checked the first amendment of the US does not have a "for the rich" clause.
It can't be a POW camp. I mean, even the Germans in WW2 allowed Red Cross visits to POW camps...
The difference is probably that all the "interesting" data is now neatly collected in one place, ready to be used.
Some countries actually have laws in place to keep their governments specifically from doing just that.
I don't care, as long as he/she/whatever can do his/her/whatever job.
My team here consists only of white males. Why? Because only white males applied for the jobs.
If a black, gay, transsexual Jewish woman applies AND displays the necessary skill set, I'll hire her. But certainly not just because she's a black, gay, transsexual Jewish woman.
I stopped playing Paranoia.
It started to feel too close to home.
Sadly for everyone who notices the problem there are 10 others who play cheerleaders to the whole shit.
Maybe this really is what the people want and I'm just the odd idiot who can't see just how great the system is, dunno.
Why stop there?
It has everything to do with capitalism. It's the ultimate form of capitalism. You can buy and sell laws, legislation and in the end, governments.
Be honest now. When you read this, and how a congressman was trying to limit the power of the FCC, the entity that tried to eliminate net neutrality just recently, did you think "yay" or was your first thought "now how is this going to be used to fuck us over"?
Am I the only one who feels like ANY kind of law being introduced today is aiming at screwing the average voter over in favor of the interest of a few corporations?
25 years too late, his wet dream coming true.
Those who can, do; those who can't, write. Those who can't write work for the Bell Labs Record.
