My Laptop uses about 15-60 Watts (25-30 Watts idle) and my external Display uses 30-60 Watts.
So, if I turn off my display, I save 40-70 percent of the energy and I can still "resume" in 3 seconds and run background stuff at night.
Even though it should go to sleep automatically.
