Your water bill is about to go up. PFAS testing is currently one of my water system's most expensive tests. A state program that we participate in is dramatically increasing fees because PFAS testing requirements would bankrupt the fund. My system has shown no indications of PFAS contamination, so we're in the clear for treatment and remediation. I would be terrified of the potential cost if I had to start treating for this new contaminant.

Comment Call me a skeptic (Score 1) 82

I'm skeptical of this explanation. Why would the NYSE allow the market to go live with a backup DR system active? Seems like there should be some circuit breakers to automate taking these systems offline before production data is introduced. I'm terrified that the reality holding together our financial markets relies on manual processes.

Comment Blame the accountants (Score 1) 289

Has anyone ever considered this is an accounting problem. Typical depreciation for a computer is 10% per year. In other words, the budget says your PC should last 10 years. That is obscenely unrealistic. Corporate buyers always opt for the lowest cost (and underpowered) PC. Five to seven years is a much more realistic usable life for an office PC. Replacements on that schedule would see huge gains in reduced tech support from outdated hardware and software.

Seriously. I used mobile order recently for some cones for the kids since I had some bonus points to burn. Get to the store and locked in the drive-through lanes only to find out there's no ice cream. Instead of canceling my order, I get home to find extra items added to my mobile order and charged to my credit card.

Comment DirecTV Now failed at what it promised (Score 2) 73

I jumped on the DirecTV Now bandwagon to get an AppleTV cheep. The service was just as good as any other cable provider. Most of the time, things worked, but nothing stand out. Then they started raising prices. Again and again. You don't have the infrastructure in the ground, so this should be cheaper than regular cable. What they missed is most providers are allocating the infrastructure cost across multiple services – especially in ways that affect tax burdens. As a customer, I don't care about your tax structure, but you can't promise a cheaper alternative to cable and then raise my price 3x in just a few months.

Comment XP is my only choice (Score 1) 228

I work with two XP systems; one is a VM and the other a stand-alone box. Both run very outdated software that interface with industry-specific hardware that has been end-of-life for over a decade. The strange thing is just because no one manufactures these particular systems doesn't mean they are obsolete. Both work well and have proved the test of time for robustness.
