Advertising to people who work on video games, presumably targeting people who make purchasing decisions for their studios. Those people aren't necessarily gamers.
As Gamasutra was no longer a site targeted at that demographic they decided not to waste the money advertising to people who aren't there.
Gamasutra is an industry site. It was *never* targeted at the gaming demographic to begin with

LD players are very easy to get in working order. You can get a lower-grade player for pretty cheap, and even nice-quality ones are in good supply. Heck, the last model (a middling-quality DVD/LD combo player) was still being made until just a few years ago.
He's entitled to his opinion and he's entitled to spend the money he has earned as he sees fit.
The issue gets a lot more thorny when you remember that he's the CEO of the foundation and is now the ultimate authority on employee benefits. I've already seen people express concern that their top-level boss, or potential boss, thinks they should not be able to get married and has put forward money to try to make it that way.

Have you been paying attention to Day Z? It's a mod for Arma II, a 2-year-old game - which became so popular, it's pushed Arma II to the top of the Steam best-seller list for months on end. Mods make money by expanding the sales curve, or even bringing an old game back to the best-seller lists years later.
