How many stolen cars are reported each and every day in America?

Car jacking is much more serious than just car theft. You really want the cops to prioritise catching car jackers. That doesn't mean they should get a pass for unleashing SWAT tactics indiscriminately. They should be required to knock on the door first (yes, risking alerting criminals and endangering themselves) unless they have much stronger evidence that armed criminals are actually inside.

CO2 remains for centuries in the atmosphere but methane only lasts for roughly 9 years, so it's hard to directly compare their global warming potential (GWP). If you measure over 20 years (GWP20) then methane is 84 times worse whereas if you measure over 100 years (GWP100) it's only 28 times worse. There is argument over which is the most appropriate in our current circumstances but the smaller, GWP100 value is used most often globally.

I could understand banning selling this stuff for deceptive labelling. Or banning it until any health concerns had been addressed. But banning it explicitly because it competes with the old way of doing business seems ridiculous and un-American. It's like banning cars, not because they're dangerous, but because they're going to put horses and buggies out of business.

And, this is state-based legislation; aren't they just begging to have the lab-grown meat producers go elsewhere?

when it comes to cattle burps and farts, that's carbon which is already part of the natural carbon cycle

This is misleading, because the issue with "burps and fats" is the methane content. Methane is 84 times worse than CO2 as a greenhouse gas and it takes around 9 years to break down into CO2 in the atmosphere. Methane is rated as 28 times worse than CO2 for climate change. Carbon isn't all the same.

Calling 44x33 medium format is really a stretch though. Before digital, medium format generally meant at least 56x41.5, and full frame is 36x24. So those 100-megapixel sensors have a diagonal only 27% longer than a full frame sensor and medium format film is another 27% longer. IMAX uses a 70.4x52.5 frame which is a further 26% longer on the diagonal.

Mirrorless cameras can now have negative lag, thanks to "pre-capture". You half-press the shutter and it starts recording stills into memory at a high rate (up to 120fps). If you then fully press the shutter, up to the last second's worth of these images are saved to your media. Obviously this requires the use of a purely electronic shutter, but sensors with a global shutter make this much less of a problem. It looks like Nikon's implementation currently limits pre-capture to JPG although I think Sony's can do raw.

I suspect that features that involve continuous high-speed reading of the sensor, like video and pre-capture, will be more limited in a vacuum due to issues with overheating; cooling is harder if you can only radiate heat away.

Comment Heat pump hot water from solar PV has advantages (Score 1) 123

Compare 70% efficient direct solar with 20% efficient solar PV driving a hot water heat pump. Those pumps can easily exceed 350% efficiency, making PV the winner. I have a system that uses CO2 as the refrigerant and it works down to 10C (and has no booster). It's probably not suitable in colder climates but then direct solar hot water can struggle there too. A big advantage is that you can program the heat pump to come on during the middle of the day, when the air is hottest (making it most efficient) and solar PV electricity is abundant. On very cloudy days it uses some mains electricity but it's still way more efficient than the electric booster element typically used by direct solar hot water systems in the same conditions.

By the way, CO2 as a refrigerant might seem bad, but its CO2-equivalent factor is, of course, exactly 1. Other common refrigerants have factors of several hundred.
