Sorry, I never meant to suggest that anyone use Windows. Personally, I feel it's a terrible choice (running Fedora Linux myself here)

But, it is a bit hard to discuss the evolution of tablets today without bringing it into the discussion.

I don't think it works that way any more.

Tablets used to be defined by the entry method. They generally had pens or styluses for user control, and a few very specialized ones had touchscreens.

Now, Tablet OS's are almost always appstore based (iOS, Android, Blackberry Tablet OS, Windows RT, etc.). With this new generation of device, it seems the OS frequently is used to determine whether it is classified as a laptop or a tablet.

I don't really know how Windows 8 fits in. Clearly MS thinks that software developers will be happy that they only need to make one version of their software, but it's just not going to work that way. For example, you can run Photoshop on Windows 8, but can only run Photoshop Express (flash-based) on Windows RT.

There are devices now with semi-permanent keyboards running Windows 8, which I would definitely put in the "Laptop" category. MS Surface tablets with Intel CPUs and Windows 8 don't seem that much different. Sure, they can run things from the appstore, but they can run traditional third party desktop programs also.

Depends on how you download. In Fedora, I typed this, and got LibreOffice:

But, if you go to the openoffice website looking for a download, there's no mention of LibreOffice there at all.

Um, you do realize you posted this to Slashdot, right? Linux support always matters here.

The last time I posted something from my own website to slashdot, my webserver logs showed a solid 40% representation of Linux-based browsers.

If you post article here that says "you can view this for free in your browser!", then linux support most definitely matters.

For those who think an image would be useful

(I touchtype using Dvorak layout, which means I can type reasonably quickly for long periods comfortably. That's also very important.)

Dvorak layout: People come to it for the increased speed, but they stick with it for the comfort.

But, if you get spam at one of those addresses with added periods, there is no way to turn it off.

And, unless you have a really large email address, it's going to be hard to keep track of more than about 20 or 30 different variations. I just checked spamgroumet.com, and I currently have 650 disposable addresses. I easily can tell what each address is for, based on what words are in the address.

I like this article, but if this does get accepted, please fix the spelling of "Mystery" and "Typical". It seems that ggrocca really does not like the letter y.

I was confused about how these were categorized. Eventually, I came to realize the categories are essentially by size. How lame.

VGA, SVGA, WSVGA = 300kP, 468.75 kP, 600kP

XGA, XGA+, WXGA = 768kP, 972kP, 960kP

HD+, UXGA, WSXGA+ = 1406.25kP, 1875kP, ~1723kP

QWXGA, WQHD, WQXGA = 2304kP, 3600kP, 4000kP

I'm using "kP" (kiloPixel) as 1024 pixels.

Actually, just after posting that, I looked it up. Wikipedia says:

And, it turns out, natural gas is generally considered a fossil fuel. So, I was pretty much wrong.

The term "Natural Gas" is to indicate that it is not from plant or animal remains.

Even though crude oil does contain hydrocarbons, it is far from the most abundant source of them. Crude oil is a fossil fuel. Natural gas is not.

This is one of the few times that I'd rather see the temperature in the Rankine scale over Fahrenheit!

Essentially, they had 4 systems to choose from (Kelvin would be ideal), and they picked the very worst choice!
