Comment Re:Cool tech, but... (Score 1) 30

Yeah, I agree - it's not quite done yet. Two suggestions to 'finish' it:

1) Create a scaffolding of plumbing and electrical on site. Should be fairly prefab, and easy to assemble. Stand that all up, and the B3P (Big 3D Printer) creates the shell around it. Now you are 90%+ of the way there.

2) Have it print the shell, but with large channels where you need them in the inside surfaces and floors / ceilings. Put in all your plumbing and electrical into the channels, cover them over with the interior walls/floors/ceilings.

I would say #2 is preferable - even if the house burns down (to the concrete shell), or you want to gut it and start over, you can with all new plumbing and electrical.

Comment Re:Pumped Hydro (Score 1) 337

I could see a combination of pumped storage with an RO setup - you have it hooked up to a large elevated water tank, so the RO runs off the gravity feed - no pump there. The pumps you do have are used to refill the elevated water tank, and only run when electricity is cheap (or at least run MORE while electricity is cheap).

Would that work?

As someone who vacations on Aruba, I can answer that. Short answer is - it doesn't matter!

Aruba is close enough to the equator that it basically has no seasons. Right now? 80+ F / 30 C. Middle of January? 30 C. Middle of August? 30 C. Add in the facts that hurricanes / tropical storms can't reach it, that it has no tides, that traffic actually flows well there, and there really is no best or worst time to visit.

Though IIRC there is a slightly rainier season. Can't recall what it is. But the island is basically a desert, so that doesn't make much difference either.

They probably just go there in July because that's when they have vacations typically.

"OSTP chief Arati Prabhakar's memo said that for a person on the moon, an Earth-based clock would appear to lose on average 58.7 microseconds per Earth-day and come with other periodic variations that would further drift moon time from Earth time,"

That is absolutely unacceptable. I propose we detonate a series of nuclear charges on the moon, in series, with the blasts channeled to an angle of 41.3 degrees precisely. We'll speed the moon back up and eliminate those losses. What could possibly go wrong?

I was thinking the same thing - not that specifically, but that poker has a LOT of really specialized jargon and slang that is used nowhere else, plus a bunch of words that have meanings, in poker, that are very different from the dictionary. I would be really impressed if it worked perfectly! I'm more expecting the result to be funny, confusing, or just sad.

Flush is a really good example. I look up flush in the dictionary and there are seven major definitions. Only 1/2 of one definition is the one used for poker (5 cards all sharing the same suit). But some of the other definitions could apply during commentary. If you aren't already a poker player, the contexts could be brutal to figure out.

Since I don't speak Portuguese, I'll never know firsthand. I wish them luck though!

Comment Re: cheap labor still? Counting Panels (Score 1) 101

Well, it does and it doesn't make sense to count panels. Panels do come in different sizes, but mostly what people quote and buy for rooftop solar is whatever panel is the least $/watt. It's just what makes sense, cost-wise - you're rarely constrained by space. And that was, last time I looked (and that was a while ago) right around the 1000 watt panels.

So, using that as a rule of thumb, you can talk about different setups in numbers of panels. Not the most accurate - peak KW power I would consider better - but reasonable.

Comment No harm was done??? (Score 1) 33

Hard to believe even lawyers would stoop so low as to claim that.

"Well, yeah, it was totally mismanaged, squandered... sure. But what little was left over has been doing great! We can sell that and give everybody back their original investment (with no gain whatsoever, of course). So we're good here, right? No harm, no foul!"

That takes some brass ones to argue that.
