Submission + - Fuck beta 1

An anonymous reader writes: The beta is bad. It's so bad. The comments are reduced in screen width about 50%. Subject lines are deemphasized, scores are minimized, etc.

The discussions are the reason to come to Slashdot, and the beta trivializes them entirely. It looks like the comment section on a generic news site.

The comments now look like an afterthought, whereas they used to be the primary focus of the site.

Submission + - User Backlash at Slashdot Beta Site (slashdot.org) 3

hduff writes: Look at almost any current Slashdot story and see loyal, long-time members rail against the new site design, willing to burn precious karma points to post off-topic rants against the new design and it being forced on users by the Dice Overlords. Discussion has begun to create an alternate site.

Submission + - Boycott Beta 2

An anonymous reader writes: On February 5, 2014, Slashdot announced through a javascript popup that they are starting to "move in to" the new Slashdot Beta design.

Slashdot Beta is a trend-following attempt to give Slashdot a fresh look, an approach that has led to less space for text and an abandonment of the traditional Slashdot look. Much worse than that, Slashdot Beta fundamentally breaks the classic Slashdot discussion and moderation system.

If you haven't seen Slashdot Beta already, open this in a new tab. After seeing that, click here to return to classic Slashdot.

We should boycott stories and only discuss the abomination that is Slashdot Beta until Dice abandons the project.
We should boycott slashdot entirely during the week of Feb 10 to Feb 17 as part of the wider slashcott

Moderators — only spend mod points on comments that discuss Beta
Commentors — only discuss Beta

Keep this up for a few days and we may finally get the PHBs attention.

I think that waht Ubuntu Mobile has to offer is the ability to become a PC when connected to o monitor. Right now no other mobile OS can make this. In a certain way, is exactly the opposite of Windows 8 (and Gnome 3 or even Unity): one interface for all devices, wich means a mobile interface for desktops. In this case, we have an interface for phones and tablets, but when it becomes a PC we have the full desktop interface. Ok, it's Unity and I don't like it, but I still find ti better than Metro. Other point that I find interesting is that the apps can be made in html. If Firefox Os gains any traction at all it could means that both can share the same web apps, with no need to write the same code twice for different systems. Ubuntu has something new to offer, but I don't know if is enough to gain any market share, even more because 2014 is too far away.

The problem is not they are trying to innovate, that is fine and needed, but they are trying to do it at the cost of what is old, familiar and functional when you could have both things. Just look at all the work with Cinnamon and MATE to have what we already had but lost without much reason. With Gnome 4 they probably will remove the terminal. Why should we bother with another level of complexity?

The original list posted by LulzSec is divided in two parts. The first half has an assortment of emails from many domains. The second half contains emails of brazilians, most of them from hotmail and yahoo (many have .br at the end, or use brazilian names and words). Probably they compromised some windows live server? Comment they don't need to reboot, they need to end it (Score 1) 292

That's the difference between manga and comics. Mangas, in general, have an ending, so you can write a coeherent and complex story wihout the necessity of adding tons of new characters to keep it running, kill and ressurect the protagonist 15 times, create tens of multiverses or reboot everything at each 10-15 years because everything is so full os contradictions. No only manga, but series like Sandman, Watchmen (and even Calin & Hobbes), have endings too. They only need to reboot because they don't know when to stop.
