Comment Differentiate between concept and implementation (Score 1) 169

People conflate Facebook as a concept with Facebook the application (or website). I believe social media is a great idea, whether it's Facebook, Twitter, or MySpace. How that information is presented is what gets botched, especially when the platform looks to monetize.

I don't want an algorithm deciding what I should see and when. I don't mind the interjection of ads between articles and posts, I just want to read how I want to see it. I want to see friends posts in chronological order. I want to see articles according to interests I dynamically set. I want the ability to filter - exclude or include - according to my preference, not the platforms.

Is that really too much to ask? Can't my preferences coexist with monetization?

I think so.

My favorite issue of Byte (so much so, I've kept it all these years) is from March 1988 [https://archive.org/details/byte-magazine-1988-03, PDF pages 225-232] solely because of the beach ball rendering with Phong shading.

After modifying the code so it would compile in Turbo C, I'd execute the program on every PC in the office. The article states the program took 8 minutes on an 80386 with FP emulation; add in an 80387 and run time dropped to less than 30 seconds. That was my experience on our fleet of 286 and 386 office machines.

Running it on my home PC (286-12) without a floating-point co-processor took significantly longer than a 386 but when I plugged in a 287 (yes, I actually bought one so I could run AutoCAD 9), it decreased as dramatically as the 386/387 combo.

Same crime but far worse, especially given that the motive was not whistleblowing (as in Manning's case) but impressing the reporter enough that she had sex with him.
Manning did it for the USA - calling it treason suggests a very perverted idea of King before Country.

Such as this?

If that's the case, then you're being maliciously slanderous. You're literally lying about what he said, and defaming Damore's intentions and character by attributing thoughts and feelings to him that he simply does not have.

Very calm and logical I do not think. You've been ranting and foaming at the mouth about "whistleblowing" when nothing at all has been added to publicly available information - you need facts and not special snowflake hurt feelings to whistleblow.
This entire ridiculous thing is about double standards and being so incredibly naive about American corporations that you seem to think they are "liberal".
Haven't you got something better to do? Maybe whining about Milo Yiannopoulos and about how somebody dared to refuse to advertise his book? It seems you people think the chosen ones should be able to do whatever they like and everyone else should just get out of the way.

Now, hey, maybe you're a neuroscientist, and can explain where they got things wrong, but it looks legit to me.

Damore is out of his depth and quoting out of context and you don't have to be especially bright, and definitely no neuroscientist, to see the gaps - I'm kind of offended that you appear to think I'm stupid enough to be fooled by it.
Besides, your "research", if it was accurate, would show that women are a better fit than men for office jobs - what a fucking loser you are.

I wrote one of those (in autolisp) some time around 1989. It was not hard for a single tool BUT how the code is interpreted by the device differs, so writing something that will work on everything requires access to everything and setting what device the output is intended for somewhere in the program.
There are some python DXF libraries that you could use as a starting point to write a G-code generator that would work on your stuff over a weekend. That's probably the only way you are going to get an open source G-code generator that works on your stuff.

Photoshop has now adopted a multi-window gimp type GUI so they don't think it's so bad.
In a multi-screen or multi-virtual desktop environment working on several images at once the gimp interface makes perfect sense. If you are stuck on one screen, not so much, hence photoshop being a full screen window with subwindows and acting as it's own window manager because MS Windows wasn't doing the job.

His shit is fucking voodoo.
Quoting it just makes you look as stupid as he is especially since coding at google is not exactly a high stress situation. If his shit was real it that would make coding at google the ideal career for women instead of something high stress with life or death consequences like nursing. That's how fucking stupid it is.
