...if the guy who did these ever figured out that the reason he had to create all those mirrors was because he was constantly being linked to a Linux geek site. What's interesting about these cartoons is how freaking hilarious they are once you start to tune in to them. Oh well, I'll miss you Pokey...and remember, the "I" is for "IRE."

Huh? I'm not quite following you. Was that meant to be sarcastic? 98% of the people I know have never heard of Slashdot.

  • I don't understand the humor.
    Misfit
  • Heh.
  • THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS NUMBSKULLERY!!!

dammit. pokey the penguin was truly funny. it was zen-like humor: to the simpleton, it was meaningless and ugly. but some of us read pokey and were Enlightened, and quaked with mirth at every panel.

at least we still have Space Moose [spacemoose.com].

  • Now I finally found out what they were talking about, found the site, saw it did NOT look cool, but hey, I still don't know why I'm constantly giggling when I browse throught the archive. =)
  • Oh no! The Italians finally got them.

Pokey, I did not know you could fly the space shuttle.

The back is filled with yummy poutine!

    hooray!

  • I admit that Pokey is an aquired taste, the first time I read it I was stuck in a lab for 5 hours, so I had nothing better to do, but by the end of the archive, I was completely in love with Pokey, and the insane monkey armed with MS Paint that is clearly responsible for it. In fact, I've been using Pokey's offbeat dialogue for my answering machine messages for a few months now. The loss of Pokey left me in a catatonic state, curled in the fetal position last night. We need to do something to bring Pokey back, I volunteer to host the site on my webserver...
  • Sorry, but I just can't stop laughing ;-))
The graphics are soo lame ;-) It's like if I did it (but I didn't ;-)

I didn't find any "other" humour in the strips, though...

But then again, the graphics and the stories are so amateur that they still make me laugh ;-)
  • Skeptopotamus does not believe it, and neither do I!

Maybe I just didn't get it.

    Ah well.
  • Jesus didn't die on Easter, Jesus died on Good Friday and was resurrected on Easter. Also, Pokey has been "dead" since Tuesday. If you believe in this conspiracy though, there may be some clues hidden in the POKEY AND THE JEWISH CARPENTER [zabbo.net] strip.

WHY DON'T YOU MAKE LIKE AN ITALIAN... AND GET OFF MY SHIP!
  • SORRY OLD BEAN!! THIS WAS NOT MY IDEA!!!!

  • I HAVE AN EXTRA SANDWICH AND YOU MAY HAVE IT!!! BUT ONLY IF YOU PROMISE NOT TO WEAR IT, TOO!!!

  • I just looked at a bunch of the comics for the first time, too, and came to the same conclusion. What a pile of crap.
  • Woe is me! Pokey is the only comic that made me laugh so hard I cleared a bowel obstruction!
Someone must take up the fight! Where shall we get our vital supplies of Artic Circle Candy?!?
    Damn Italians!

Shame they didn't have those T-Shirts in medium, I woulda bought one.

  • I agree. This strip is not funny. I never heard before this, and almost wish I had never heard of it at all.

  • Could Pokey's calendar be wrong, and this is just an early April Fools joke?
    I can hope, can't I?

  • For a good time, go have a look at Spacemoose [spacemoose.com].

  • Pokey was the one TRULY funny comic on the net. Forget Dilbert, drop the Doonesbury, and even let go of your Zippy folks. Pokey the Penguin taught us all a lesson. Or at least, those of us who connected with the happy fellow.

Well, shoot. Right when you get into the habit of reading something..

Indeed. I'd only known Pokey for a few months now, but his amazing adventures and wonderful friends shall haunt me for the rest of my life, much like a flashback would.

Ok, ok, it was funny as hell and you can always recognize a Pokey fan by the non sequiturs they will spout, mostly in all caps.

POKEY I AM A SPACE NINJA!

Personally, I put UserFriendly on the same level of humor as I do Dilbert and Doonsbury. Both are humorous, perhaps, 10% of the time. But thats
just me. Pokey had VERY STRANGE HUMOR.

User Friendly / Sluggy Freelance / Goats / etc. are entirely different from Pokey. Pokey didn't try to be a newspaper-worthy daily strip, and it never tried too hard. I can't say the same for UF or Goats, where you can tell a convoluted storyline coming a mile away.

Also, Pokey didn't feature twentysomething geeks living with talking animals/weird things. That right there set it apart from the current crop of
    web comics.

I shall miss Pokey, whose insights made me laugh, cry, and, every now and then, taught me something about myself.

I'd even bookmarked my favorite Pokey cartoon [yellow5.com].
  • actually, jesus died on good friday
  • I like the DISFUNCTIONAL Family Circus...
Look it up, it's a real hoot...
  • Hmmm... I guess I don't have the POKEY GENE, but whereas I allow that some people might "have the gene", I'd also like to see Garfield put to sleep; Family Circus contract flesh-eating bacteria; BC to fall off the evolutionary tree like the lifeless limb that it is; the Wizard of Id--well, I could go on, but I won't bore y'all.

    I say, Bring back Bongo!
  • This is the first time I heard of Pokey. I went and started looking through the archives, but after about 15 or 20 of 'em, I just couldn't take it anymore. I'm sure there are those that could find humor in something that looks like it was drawn AND written by a nine year old on acid--and I must admit the "Mr. Nutty" episode was pretty funny--but I guess I'm just missing it. (I'm also sure that someone will say "That's the point!") Sure, it's surreal and makes arcane references to literature and the UN, but is that funny by default? Maybe if I read *every* archived episode, I'll enter into a zen-like state of serenity and find the joy-buzzer of enlightenment, but I don't think it's worth the time....
Oh, for added flame-bait, I should add that I don't think South Park is the pinnacle of comedy that everyone thinks it is.
  • or at least

    A POKEY FEZ!

  • MY NEW FLANNEL!
  • Pokey was indeed a beautiful things for minds that saw things the Pokey way. I stayed up late many a night reading Pokey comics endlessly, often times annoying people around me by laughing so hard. I understand this comic was not for everyone, but it will certainly be missed by myself.
  • Spacemoose tries just way too hard to push buttons, imho.

it definitely doesn't trigger my pokey gene.
  • I'm still not sure if this is cool or really really sad, but a few friends and I have decided to combat the death of Pokey with a few episodes of our own. Check them out here. [simplenet.com] Tata.
