Submitted title: Mad Cow Disease discovered in other animal species (Science,News)
The BBC reports that a French goat has tested positive for mad cow disease - the first animal in the world other than a cow to have bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). The European Commission says further testing will be done to see if the incidence is an isolated one.
You can thank the animal rendering industry for that one. Time to change to a vegetarian diet?

The Japanese test each and every cow for BSE. I don't know whether there tests are definitive. But I know that they cost $20 USD per cow.
Canadian ranchers may call me a traitor. But I would like to see Canada follow suit.

Pathetic. It wouldn't increase the cost by a $0.01 per pound. Although reconfiguring the slaughterhouses to separate the brain/vertebrae organs and then not rendering it may be a significant cost. And now since they're finding prions in all sections of meat, they may have to abandon the ruminants industry. That, I suspect, is what is driving rancher industry policy

The overhead for doing the right thing and clearing every animal is too great for the US market. It's much easier to dump suspect meat on an overseas buyer and just change the country of origin label, to Australia in one case.
