Craftsman is dead

Comments Filter:
  • The new company plans to operate the Kmart and Sears businesses under their current brand names.

And thus Craftsman is not dead- though I wonder how long it will be before it's no longer made in the USA now that this new merged company is sure to follow in the Walmart/Target model of sourcing low-cost from China.
    • It will start off well enough. A few departments will get the heave-ho (legal, HR, accounting), but then months later they'll tell the rest of Sears that they have to now operate the "Kmart way" (i.e., stock stuff no one wants and run out of stuff people actually want to buy), and that will be it.
  • Whoa. Unreal. Just about the only tools I own are Craftsman. My sincerest hope is that this will be a touch of competition for Wally World.
    • Ya. My grampa and dad both bought pretty much only Craftsman, and my dad's gas station and garage was fully Craftsman-equipped back in the day (at least whatever Craftsman had that they could use). My parents still have gobs of Craftsman tools lying around.

'Twould be a sad day if Kmart runs Sears even further into the ground than it already is. Since Kmart only just emerged from bankruptcy, it's...well, not a good omen. (As it is I was kinda pissed that Sears bought Land's End. Nice way to sell your futur

  • We've seen how well Kmart can run a business. B'bye, sweet tooling goodness.

I really don't think that even K-Mart would be stupid enough to move production of craftsmen abroad. Craftsman has made a name for being the best tool america makes. At times even digging at other tool makers like Stanley for merely assembling their tool in america.

Being a sparky most of my tools are klein anyway, so I'm not to worried.

All they have to do is add "in China" in tiny print at the end of that statement and no one will notice.

  • I am a gadget freak but I have to admit that Craftsman has lost its appeal for a long time. Their tools are still good but their equipment has gone slowly down hill over the years. I would not buy a Craftsman lawn mower any longer. It has been a slow down hill slide for a tool gadget nerd's dream. *sigh* Oh well.
    • Yeah, the Craftsman power tools suck, but their hand tools are very good, kind of like Snap-On's, but without the extra zero in the price :)

When it comes to things that plug in, I'm pretty partial to DeWalt, although my compressor is a Sears-brand. I've had it for about 5 years, no complaints.
