Journal Quantum Jim's Journal: I am not a Troll! 12

I just don't understand /.'s moderators. Why was this post on Google's browser possible based on MSHTML moderated as a troll by someone? I sincerely meant everything that I said. I tried to be polite and not condescending - even proactively admitting a social blunder. I also backed up my analysis with some (admittly, anecdotal) evidence. I simply don't understand why it is being moderating like that. What am I doing wrong?

Several of my other posts in the last couple of weeks were moderated down for suspect reasons. I never try to hurt anyone's feelings. This is making me a litle paranoid. I am beginning to feel like an outsider in these discussions... (ironic from a "nerd's news portal.") Why is that?

  • Since it's not in the list- 20% overrated though.

I think we've gotten some particularily mean spirited moderators as of late.
    • nevermind- don't add up to 100%. I'd say from this however

      50% Insightful
      20% Interesting
      20% Overrated

That only ONE moderator thought you were a troll, 5 thought you were insightfull, 2 thought you were interesting, and 2 thought you were overrated.
      • Urp. No. Two said insightful, one interesting, one overrated. They always round to the tens, and his comment was only upmodded net +2 (+3-1).

Anyway, here's some of my reasoning as to why your post may have been considered overrated: one, Google has been known to hire very smart people, so they have little use for recent VB grads, and may well design their own renderer. Two, shelling MSHTML does very little for them if that comes to light. They don't want to be seen as supporting Microsoft or not supporting
        • Thanks, that makes sense. Does that mean that "-1, Overrated" really means "-1, I disagree"? Your points are opinions rather than facts. In fact, I think those are perfectly valid and I agree to one degree or another (40-80%). Many of my discussions on /. are mainly to get clarifications and debate about topics I'm slightly confused about and to practice my poor writing skills.

Still, I wasn't upset by the overrated mod. The post was rated as a Troll before (somehow, it vanished), and I couldn't figure

          • On the rare occasions *I* use the "overrated" mod, it's because I feel something is being posted which only reaffirms the /. "conventional wisdom" in a redundant fashion - especially in cases where a redundant might not truly be appropriate because the comment hasn't been made in that particular article. The comment could be true and informative but the lack of true insight annoys me sometimes. Using the overrated mod in this case means that it's not going to be tagged for meta-moderation and thus overtu
          • When a mod disappears, it's probably because the moderator later posted in the same discussion. You can't moderate and participate in the same discussion, so when you post, you can no longer moderate, and if you've moderated and then post, your previous mod is removed. Mystery solved.
        • 50+20+20=90. What happened to the other 10%?

Other than that, I completely agree with you on the moderations.
    • I also noticed a trend for odd moderation lately. Some serious posts (not just mine) were moderated as "funny" for instance. I have a theory why: CmdrTaco changed "funny" mods so they don't give a person any karma. So moderating a serious post as "funny" makes it visible yet unlikely to gain "insightful" or "interesting" mods.

Furthermore, most modding down seems to occur well after the first post on a story. So the funny mods are downgraded though "overrated" or "troll" labels. These negatives affect

  • There are a lot of trolls on Slashdot using downmods to silence legitimate posts. See anti-slash.org [anti-slash.org] for an example of one such group. In addition, mod points are regularly "sold" on E-Bay to the highest bidder which people buy to help disrupt things or silence enemies.

It's just an attempt to disrupt the system so that people can't easily read the legitimate posts without reading the GNAA junk posts and such as well.

Just ignore it. Unless you become a target of someone with a chip on their shoulder, it w

    • That was an insightful post. What jerks [anti-slash.org]! Don't they have anything better to do?

      • I troll rather frequently now, but that doesn't mean that I'm too dumb to make a good point when it's called for ;)

Well... admittedly, I buy into their philosophy if not the practice they follow. That's probably why you foed me in the first place.

I think that the gripes they have against Slashdot are legimitate* (although part of the reason my karma is falling like a lead weight in water is that I post relatively succesful trolls, the fall actually *started* because I picked up some karma whores who get r
