Journal Elbereth's Journal: Why are you reading this? 11

No, really, I'm curious. I thought I was pretty damn witty, but my lack of fans on Slashdot has been a truly crushing blow to my ego. Either that or I just don't care. I forget which.

I bought Everyone vs Bob the Angry Flower, and it arrived on Friday! Yay! It's even signed. I can't imagine anything cooler, other than a sex-starved girl in a Porsche.

Wait. Finding a $20 bill on the ground would probably be just as cool.

  • I see a fair number of folks who tagged you as a friend, but you are looking at a different set of people in your fan list. There is no 'fan list' etiquette, but nothing attracts a crowd like a crowd... The real fun starts when you have to hand pick which of the 200 people you have to bump when another friend worthy poster comes along.
    • I've been adding a lot of people to both my friend and enemy list lately. When someone posts a particularly annoying comment that gets modded up really high (+5, insightful), I go through his history to see if I get just as annoyed with all of his other comments. Most people fail this test, as they aren't as clueless or belligerent enough to warrant a -6 penalty to their score. A couple of people in my enemy list are "first post" wannabes.

I'm not usually that picky when I add someone as a friend. Usual
      • It is not that there are that many fantastic posters... just so many bad ones at +2. I find some of the best postings actually in the JE rather than the main page. Few mod bombers, trolls, and other problem people to bother with them.

Old hardware junky? I've got one for you... My bride looked at the clutter of computers in our two bedroom apartment ten years back and said to condense my boxes. I was scrounging for hardware at the Lockheed Marten outlet store and snagged one for $25. I picked up a Sun

Well said. I read a lot of the journals that I see come up in the messaging. I hardly ever comment in them though, maybe I should more often.
  • Well I guess at one point or another you must have said something witty enough that I clicked you in to the list. :)
    • I'm quite honored. :)

Articles on Slashdot seem to come in only three flavors now: alarmist, smug, and funny. I've tried my best to filter out the alarmist articles (all that YRO crap), but I still get way too much smug crap on my front page. I used to hold out hope that Slashdot would report on something technical, but then I realized how silly that was. Slashdot hasn't become dumbed down for the masses... it was always this way! Oh well. What can you do? Well, except troll. Haha.
      • hehe... I hear you about the articles but for some reason, unknown to me as to exactly what, there is a certain charm to the site and I keep coming back... jeeze, I even paid for a subscription :)

Anyways, I think the zoo system (friends/fans/foes/freaks) is a pretty cool feature. I see something interesting written by someone and I flag that person to see them in the many of posts under a given story. Cool. Now if I could figure out why someone has gone as far as becoming a freak maybe it will make sense
  • what proof do you have..?
    • Hmm... good point. If I whisper a secret to a stranger, is it still a secret? What if they aren't listening? Reading journals is sort of like being that stranger, hearing secrets being whispered to you by random people. Or maybe I'm a voyeur at heart.
      • no, actually the answer is: because I posted a reply! :)

Seriously, I wonder what the number of journal lurkers is now... personally, I'm reading the journals more and more. Wonder what slashdot community thinks about war... search journals for "war", etc..
