Who'd be left to buy their product? They want us sick... in order to prop up their pharmaceuticals and health insurance (what with the upcoming mandates) portfolios.

It's true, but killing a percentage of us is a known byproduct (not really side-effect, since they can probably find ways to profit on our death, too) and a means of population control. Part of what makes this country rich is the low population density. Since industrialization the sweet spot for the number of people in your society has fallen.
