Journal Marxist Hacker 42's Journal: Ask Slashdot: Bluetooth Bike Helmet Reviews 6
In the next few weeks, soon as the weather stabilizes enough, I'm going to be returning to bicycle commuting. Well, not really- instead of a bicycle, I'm riding an electric scooter- a Curie Tech Ezip 500.
Since the last time I did this, I upgraded to a very nice Tmobile G2 cell phone with all sorts of bells, whistles, and sensors.
Obviously, since it's going to take me nearly twice as long to get to work (30MPH roads, 16MPH scooter) I'd really like some good sound support while not compromising safety (too much). A mono bluetooth that supports A2DP & Handsfree would be nice- integrated into the helmet by either manufacturer or hardware hacking would be even nicer.
Anybody got any recommendations?

Unless you really want to become road kill, rig the phone camera to use as a rear view mirror. I strongly advise against good sound support, unless it's an amplifier to hear what's about to hit you from behind.

Put a forklift motor in it. It'll probably do 0 - 60 faster than the Jag.

Get a real helmet (Score:2)
Get a real helmet. Get a real bluetooth earpiece. Helmet makers are too worried about materials analysis and the like to waste time on electronic gee-gaws.

That's what I ended up doing, yes. Still worried about the bluetooth falling off during vibration- but the only alternative was a $150-$200 motorcycle helmet (that included not only stereo bluetooth, but a microphone overlay to transmit road noise and compatibility with other bluetooth helmets for intercom). Maybe one day.
