Journal twitter's Journal: Dvorak: M$ Should Scuttle Vista or he Exits to Linux/Mac. 5

The man who once said, "there is no way that Vista will be a flop" has changed his mind and thinks M$ should abandon Vista.

Microsoft has extended the life of Windows XP because Vista has simply not shown any life in the market. We have to begin to ask ourselves if we are really looking at Windows Me/2007, destined to be a disdained flop. By all estimates the number of Vista installations hovers around the number of Macs in use.

Microsoft wants to be in the advertising business because Google is in the advertising business. Meanwhile, it can't do its real job. ... [M$ should] give up on the stupid variations and lower the price [Vista Ultimate, $99] ... scuttle the entire product ... Roll out Vista 2.0

I'm certainly not going to be a happy camper if I have to switch to a Mac or Linux system full-time, yet that is exactly where this scatterbrained company seems to be sending me.

Get yourself a Asus EEE a Dell GNU/Linux box or even a Mac, John, and join the free software party where everyone else is having fun and getting their work done.

Update: March 9, 2009

Dvorak becomes a GNU user and gushes praise for Ubuntu:

While your PC is running Ubuntu as a live install, the CD is doing all the work for the OS, and even so, it's at least as snappy as Windows. Install it onto the hard disk as the OS for the system and the thing really flies. I'm not sure how many legacy old clunkers can run this operating system, but it's the perfect reinstall for older machines that bog down under Windows. The live feature is what it makes it so cool; no need to install the OS before thoroughly testing it.

... I seriously appreciate the fact that Linux is mostly immune from malware, in much the same way as the Macintosh. I had a small machine in the kitchen running Windows, and every time I ran a scan on the thing I kept discovering too many problems. ... With Windows, the performance always declines. I don't think Microsoft has ever sent out a patch that improved the performance of the machine. Ever.

If I had a small or mid-size company, I'd probably use only Linux and open-source software, just to stay out of the way of the software police and their onerous "audits"another abhorrent situation that, to me, is intolerable. You should also note that almost all of the newest hardware coming out has Linux support. The critical mass has been reached.

He's still got a lot of misconceptions, like the popularity argument for security. With a little bit of use, he will understand what makes GNU/Linux really cool and the misconceptions will fade away.

  • What am I supposed to do now? Since Dvorak gets everything wrong, that means Vista is great and is going to conquer the world, right? Just what I needed as I wean myself off the MS tit and *HEAD EXPLODES*
