  • Not a bad comment at all.

I have a radical idea, which is certain to offend a lot of people. Here it is: The Constitution is shit. Absolute shit. It might have been good smelling shit 200+ years ago, but it's foul shit right now. Nobody can understand it. Conservatives ignore it.

Time to write a new constitution. It should say things clearly, and right at the top it should have an expiration date - 50 years from now. At that time it has to be completely rewritten.

Nothing can get tabled. All words have to be c
    • A part of me agrees. After all, why should we agree to what a bunch of old guys waxing philosophical said over 200 years ago. But I fail to see how we could do better. I do wish that shit would have been included in the actual text, definitions and meanings of words shouldn't be left for later ambiguity and re-interpretation.

Speaking of such things, the pathetic douche bag governor of South Dakota is interpreting things to his sway, so that the organizations under him do not have to report to the people

      • But I fail to see how we could do better.

We're not going to predict the future any better than the founding fathers did. Hence the requirement that the entire constitution be rewritten in 50 years.

But, we can do better. You gave the example of the specifically outlined gun right given in a later state document. Militia wasn't left to ambiguity. They specifically said that individuals could use guns to protect their own homes, go hunting, and so on. They basically stopped that everlasting debate dead in it's
    • Yeah, good luck with that. I've got a better idea: Why not do a swap? Say, gun rights for abortion. Let's be honest, apart from the hardcore fringe, I don't think anybody really wants to give up all guns. Conversely, I think we can all agree that apart for some fringe elements, nobody likes abortion, but nobody wants the government telling you what to do with your own bodies (seriously, they can take control of your organs, but not your guns? Fucking weird.)

So how about we agree that abortions and
      • So how about we agree that abortions and guns are going to happen and concentrate on other, more important shit? The fundies are going to have to make a concession sooner or later or else they'll face irrelevance.
I totally agree. I don't like abortion, but I don't think it is enough of an issue to be of such importance. I think that what a person does they will have to be accountable for someday.

That sounds ultra-Christian, let me ponder why I said that. Yes I am a Christian, but that is not the main

        • My set of politically important opinions:
          Pro Gun
          Pro Choice
          Pro Death Penalty
Pro Homosexual Rights (Gay marriage and the like)
Anti Drugs, including the legal ones like nicotine and alcohol.
          Pro Military
          Anti International Affairs Interference
          Pro Education
          Pro Business

You could lump the first 4 into the subset of Pro Population Control, if you wanted to be a smartass about it like my friends. On drugs, I've been lucky enough to not have my life personally impacted on, but a friend of mine grew up with an alcohol
      • Now that's an interesting topic switch worth considering. The current right to abortion is actually a right to privacy. The government doesn't have any business interjecting into the relationship between a doctor and a patient. Too many people don't understand that, thinking there's some kind of right to abortion that judges invented.

The real problem is that privacy is a concept that isn't well treated by the current constitution. The new one would say absolutely you have the right to privacy, and it covers

Thank you! Bugs the shit outta me that fundies always get it backwards.

It's a medical option that saves lives and the quality of life, so what's not to love?

I was just thinking about that after I posted my last comment - something along the lines of of how we needed a new '10 commandments' to replace the old ones, and for me, one of those would be having a a formalized, cheap and easy acc
