RevMike's Journal: Sick and Tired of Political JEs

I'm sick and tired of all your politics Journal Entries. You all complain about the lying, cheating, negative campaigning, smearing, etc etc etc. And you all want to live in the town of Gum Drop Falls, near Chocolate Lake, and everyone is good and decent and honest.

AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN!!!

I'll let you in on a big secret. To some degree they are all crooks. And so are we.

We don't live in some utopia because the human animal is flawed. Sometimes only moderately flawed, sometimes downright evil, but flawed none-the-less.

And there is the brilliance of the American system!

Everyone is selfish, self-centered, egotistical, etc. So they fight, hurl mud, organize campaigns of misinformation, etc. And they fight each other. Meanwhile, every effort they make to fight each other is that much less attention they direct at us. We are more-or-less left alone. You need to get all the officials pulling in the same direction to get mass genocides and other such fun. But get them pulling in different directions and you get left alone.

So don't worry. They are all scoundrels, but they are scoundrels who can't work together for more than a moment or two. I'm less scared of disorganized scoundrels than an organized group of seemingly 'good men', because they are just scoundrels that hide it better.

You need to really stretch that definition of "crook" to include me. I would like to know what exactly I have stolen from anybody, by any real definition, in my adult life.

You've never taken home a pen or pencil from work? You've never used a Canadian penny at the grocery store? Used the accounts or descriptions of this telecast without the express written consent of Major League Baseball?

We're all crooks on some level. Some of us have higher or lower thresh-holds for "real" in this context.

Not without permission. I prefer to use my Cross pens at home and at work. Skillcraft is fine for some, but not for pen snobs like me.

Let me try... Ever violated the DMCA? Remember, playing a DVD on Linux, or pressing print screen (or just looking in the browser cache) to save an image that has some form of copy aggrivation on it, are both illegal under the DMCA. Oh yeah, ever reverse engineer something to see how it works, or throw commands at a web app to see what you could get it to do? Ever run a security audit on software you didn't own the right to? Congrats, you are a FELON!

I guess I kind of subscribe to a (slightly less jaded :-) but not much less jaded ) viewpoint: they keep each other in check, so the fact that they don't all agree is a good thing. Like right now, with the Repubs in control, there is no balance, just the same as there is no balance when the Dems are in control. Keeping that balance is hard, which is why it would be nice to have viable third party candidates, since then you would have several seperate groups that would have to compromise to get things done.
