Journal Some Woman's Journal: Ask Uncle Dottie: Bicycles 12

I just moved to an area where I feel reasonably certain that I can ride my bike without anybody attempting vehicular homicide.

I am considering buying a bike possibly in the near future to capitalize on "Oh, hey...I guess summer's kind of over and it's going to snow soon" sales. The unusable bike I've been carting around for 14 months would cost over $200 to fix, while a new bike could be had for a scant $100-200 more.

Do you have a bike? What do you like about it? Would you recommend a particular brand? I am strictly interested in cross/hybrid bikes. Current bike is a Giant. I am strongly considering a Raleigh because I'm still pissed at 12-year old me for buying a crappier bike than the super-on-sale Raleigh for its pretty color. For the record, I chose royal blue over silver blue.

I have the helmet, now all I need is the bike. Answer away!

What is your plan? How do you intend to ride?

My wife and I both had hybrids, and neither of us really cared for them all that much. I ended up buying my wife a Terry [terrybicycles.com] used on eBay, which she absolutely loves. It is a pure road bike and she was a little intimidated by the drop handlebars at first, but now absolutely loves it. The unconventional design - smaller front wheel - helps accomodate her petite frame without sacrificing either bicycle geometry or

    • I had a hybrid bike for 12 years and liked it. Prior to that, I had a road bike. It was okay; I really can't judge road bikes from it because it was a cheapy Huffy from Target, but I don't really care for thin tires. They are prone to getting stuck in cracks/uneven surfaces, causing me to fall over, bloody my legs and ruin my favorite pink jumper. Or something like that. Bad experience. On the other end of the spectrum, I absolutely detest mountain bikes. It seems like everybody has them and I don't
      • I really like Marin Bikes and have a San Anselmo from 2003. Though it looks like Marin re-shuffled their names and prices. The San Anselmo used to be a $500 bike. Take a look [marinbikes.com] moving the mouse over the thumbnails and notice the differences of the seat position relative to the handlebars. If the seat is higher than the bars like in a road bike or many of the mountain bikes, you won't be as comfortable for city and trail rides. You'll have more power and a lower profile for less wind resistance, but you w

Lots of fun all around Toronto.:D
  • I have no idea what brand my current bicycle is; I got it from family a while back (they found it abandoned on the road) to replace my last bike. It was basically a piece of junk, but it rode well enough after some very liberal use of wd-40 (caution: be absolutly sure that you get none on your brake pads :( not a pleasant experience). Which is exactly what I wanted. Something that works well enough, but won't attract thieve's attention.
  • ...I was just talking about my bike preferences here [slashdot.org] and here [slashdot.org].

I also prefer a hybrid bike with nice fat tires...for I too once had my skinny road bike tires get caught in some not-quite-submerged train tracks in an industrial park in St. Anthony Park, I went flying, slammed into a concrete wall, broke my wrist (the one and only time I've ever broken a bone) and was leery of riding a bike for the next 20 years. I finally bought a used one early this summer, and thanks to Hannover having gobs of parks, city

Do you have a bike? What do you like about it?

Yes, I have two bikes. The first is sitting rusting in the garage. I haven't used it in years. So I bought a second, for £10 from the local bike shop (they'd taken it in part exchange from someone else, and wanted to get rid of it). I put some new inner tubes in, and it's been fine. It's perfect for me. It's a racer, which I like, with proper drop handlebars, and slim tyres. It's not a bike to take off road, but then I have no intention of doing that any

  • Lighter than a mountain bike but more terrain capabilities than a road bike, hybrids are very popular here. I picked up a Trek 7100 [trekbikes.com] last year and have been very happy with it.
