Journal LordBodak's Journal: Hard Drive Failures? 6

Ok, what's going on?

Thursday night one of the companies we work with here in VA had two hard drives fail in their RAID array - catastrophic failure.

Monday morning our corporate office (in SC) had two hard drives fail in their RAID array - catastrophic failure.

Umm, is something going on? Anyone else seeing sudden failures? It's pretty rare to see two drives die at once-- the whole point of building a RAID array is that most of the time only one drive is going to fail. And it's not like we're talking two offices close together, so a localized power issue isn't a likely culprit either.

Maybe it's just an odd coincidence, or perhaps a conspiracy.

  • About 2 months ago we noticed a red light one of our RAID5 bricks. I get sent in to the computer room to pull the disk out to get the serial number to call it in, and just left it in the enclosure (government secure computer room). Get back to my desk and they ask me if I had pulled the wrong disk, which I know I didn't. Turns out that in the 2 minutes it took me to walk back to my desk, ANOTHER disk had failed on the same brick...lost an 800GB raidset. Luckily it was 1) a relatively new oracle server s
  • You sure there wasn't already a dead drive before? Because the array would have kept going...
    • I dunno... don't really have any details, I just found it funny that they both happened so close together. Maybe Bush is using the doomsday device (you know, the one he created Katrina with), to adjust the earth's magnetic field and it's destroying hard drives.
  • But I think that I know why that happened.

I also suspect that the box of harddrives that I just discovered yesterday that had a full lockbox of coins tossed on top of them won't work either, but I suppose that's a completely different kind of sudden harddrive failure.
  • You're making me want to move to RAID 6, just in case.

The flow chart is a most thoroughly oversold piece of program documentation. -- Frederick Brooks, "The Mythical Man Month"
