Journal M.C. Hampster's Journal: Underrated Movies 11

I am seeing Episode III tonight. I will be meeting stoolpigeon at a theater, so if you don't ever hear from me again, it's because he has hacked me up into pieces or something.

Far too many great movies get released and are never heard of again. What are your favorite underrated movies? In my top three would be:

  • Frequency - Stars Dennis Quaid and Jesus Christ. About a son who manages to contacts his dead father over a radio because of a the northern lights. Yeah, sounds strange, but a great movie. I ball at the end each time due to blatant emotional manipulation, but it is still fun. I watch this every Father's Day.
  • The Iron Giant - An animated flick that got lost cause it wasn't by Disney. One of the few WB Animation releases, and it is quite good. It can be a bit scary for the little ones as a warning.
  • Defending Your Life - Stars Albert Brooks and Meryl Streep. This is one of my favorite comedies. Story about what "really happens after you die". Anytime I see Rip Torn, I think of his character in this film.

What about you?

Underrated Movies

  • but Magnolia [imdb.com] works for me. Especially the Aimee Mann soundtrack - jobs makes the whole mood. Don't know if it qualifies as underrated, since it in the imdb 250 all-time greatest [imdb.com] list, but none of my friends ever talk about it so I thought that should qualify it.

It was the first one that came to mind, anyway.

And I thought Frequency and IG rocked too. Haven't seen Defending Your Life - must add it to the list.

Iron Giant was great; entertaining to kids and adults. I would add Gattaca and Memento to the list (though it appears Memento made the top 250 on imdb). As for silly movies, I pick Starship Troopers, Mystery Men, and Tremors, as long as you don't take them seriously :-)
    • I will back you up on Gattaca, Tremors and Mystery Men. (I'm too much of a hardcore RAH fan too get over the revulsion I have for ST the movie). I didn't see Memento.

First time I saw tremors it was on t.v. and I had no idea what it was about. I loved it. That's as close to 'scary' movies as I get. Very little actually scary-- good action.
  • Wings of Desire, My Life as a Dog, The Chocolate War.

I am leaving work at 4 - leaving my house at 5- should be at the theater by 5:30. Picking up my cleaver er... I mean lightsaber, on the way home.

Another list I have is favorite movies that are not really all that great. PeeWee Hermans Big Adventure, The Quiet Man, the first Karate Kid. I love those. There are more but I can't think of them right now.
  • Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
    Batman: Sub-Zero

Both are from the WB animation studios and use the talent from the (fantastic, IMHO) Batman Animated Series. Guaranteed to make you forget about the awful Schumacher films.

    Drop Dead Gorgeous

One of my favorite movies, and so funny I had to watch it several times to catch all the jokes.

I'd also recommend Undercover Brother, Super Troopers ("meow do you know how fast you were going?"), and while they're a bit dated the Cannonball Run (1 & 2) movies

  • About a son who manages to contacts his dead father over a radio because of a the northern lights.

    What's your opinion of Contact?

    • I actually really enjoyed Contact. I was thinking about reading the book. Have you read it? Is it much different?

      • I enjoyed the book a lot too, and I think it adds depth to the characters. I'd recommend it if you liked the movie.
      • Yeah the book is good, quite a bit different (at least if I recall) and certainly some things are expanded upon, such as some interesting bits about PI which I won't expand on so as not to ruin it for you if you read the book :-)
  • The 13th Warrior. Some SciFi movie with Kurt Russel, I think it's called 'Soldier'. Warriors Of Heaven And Earth (quite good, btw). Anything with Monica Bellucci in it except for the stupid matrix sequels and... the passion of the christ. Hmmm, I feel slightly dirty now.

There are a lot of 80s and 90s movies that are also underrated. OTTOMH, 'My Bodyguard', 'To Die For' and so on.
