Journal tomhudson's Journal: Sammy and pudge, my quest for 1000 freaks, etc 70

SamTheButcher and pudge have been "going at it". Sammy tried to do the right thing, to make peace; pudge said Sammy wasn't offering anything he was interested in.

It doesn't get much more ignorant than this:
http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=179334&cid=14905813

Sammy: It's just really shocking to me when people rebuff you when offered the chance to make the discussion more civil.

pudge: I am utterly uninterested in "civility." I am interested in ideas. You offered none. You only offered to ... I don't even know what you were offering. But I do know it was not remotely interesting.

I'm still shy 915 freaks in my quest to get 1,000 freaks (I'd at least like to break 100). Guess it's time to creatively foe a few people, and antagonize a few more, and I know just whose friends/fans list to look into.

Any ideas on constructively trolling the foe system, anyone?

    • Sam, civility IS an idea. And i've yet to see a conversation in which you did not have worthwhile ideas to offer.

      *sigh*

Civility is one of the BEST ideas. Thank you for offering it, you make the world better.

        • Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.

My first thought after reading that was along the lines of "So God prefers revolvers to automatics, too." ;-)
      • That's just it. Sammy is "good people". pudge accused Sam of trolling him with his offers to talk by email. Sam denied it, saying he had only trolled On Lawn (a lot of us were trolling On Lawn in response to him trolling everyone; that's when I caught him posting "anonymously" but forgetting to check the "post anonymously" box http://slashdot.org/~tomhudson/journal/80081 [slashdot.org])

I pointed out that Sam doesn't troll - he's not very good at it - and the offer was genuine.

pudge said "give me a reason" to email hi

        • The response, iirc - "Those aren't reasons."

Right. You did not give any actual reasons. You made many of them up, such as saying "it's the right thing to do" without saying WHY it is the right thing to do. And your others were not reasons TO do it, but reasons NOT TO NOT do it.

That you cannot grasp this is, well, entirely typical.
          • your others were not reasons TO do it, but reasons NOT TO NOT do it.

That you cannot grasp this is, well, entirely typical.

That you place such a high priority on differentiating between "reasons TO do it" and "reasons NOT TO NOT do it" is also typical. Typically sad.

Come on, send me a dozen more foes so I can at least get to 100 freaks (though I would really like to "stress-test" the system with 1000, 100 will at least be a start ... -the first 100 is always the hardest. Yes, I admit it, I'm curious

            • That you place such a high priority on differentiating between "reasons TO do it" and "reasons NOT TO NOT do it" is also typical.

              Correct.

              Typically sad.

Sad that you don't see why it is important, yes.

I could right now go watch soap operas. I have no real reason not to, apart from time; but I could make up the time in other ways. But I have no actual positive reason to do it. So saying "it won't hurt" won't convince me to do it. I need a positive reason, not an absence of negative reasons.

              This is key, thi
              • pudge: I need a positive reason,

... and "You might make a friend" is not a positive reason?

Oh, right - that could be a "Bad Thing", the posibbility of making a friend. Unless its a sure thing, forget it - after all, its not sure, so its not "really" positive, just an absence of negative.

                ... and people think I'm weird ...?

                • ... and "You might make a friend" is not a positive reason?

That falls into the other category I mentioned.

Oh, right - that could be a "Bad Thing"

Why do you put "Bad Thing" in quotes? It's not a phrase I used. I didn't say it was a bad thing, I said you failed to say why it is a GOOD thing. Just because I don't think it is good, doesn't mean I think it is bad. As far as I am concerned, it's fairly neutral. I see no real value in making new friends just for the sake of making new friends. I have lots of
              • As much as i hate to dive into the argument, you have a point here on those particular threads.

"It's the right thing to do," really is a value judgement. The point about a negative argument rather than a positive one is... well, iffy, but i'll cede that they could have been phrased in clearer ways when addressing you.

Let me give you my reasons, and you may pick them apart as you wish- but i'm not submitting them to be tested, i'm offering them as what i feel are real reasons to opt for discussion by email.

But I need an actual reason to do something. I don't want to email Sam, because I have no reason to. Telling me that it won't harm me to email him does not give me a reason to actually do it.

he sincerely was (and i believe still is) willing to consider your points of view

Sorry, but that's nonsense. Sam has many times said my point of view and
                  • I stand by my impression of Sam's sincerity, but have already acknowledged that you will do as you please, and that i don't expect to convince you.

No one should have to give you a reason to do anything. If you don't want to do it, you won't. I accept that.

                    Sam probably does, too.

    • i drafted a couple replies but discarded them, coming to the same conclusion about pudge i have in the past. no progress can be made with him. he will not change his mind. if he disagrees with you, only his interpretation matters. he is so thoroughly convinced of his own infallibility that it isn't worth his while to re-evaluate anything he's already made a decision concerning. he isn't interested in civil discourse. he may be interested in changing people's minds, but i don't think he's chosen a part
  • and I know just whose friends/fans list to look into.

Aha! I hereby thwart your attempts into trolling me into putting you on my foes list!

    Now bring me a shrubbery.

    Ni! Ni! Ni!

    • Why in the world would I foe you? You're a decent person ... or is there a dark side we haven't seen yet :-)
      • or is there a dark side we haven't seen yet

        <Darth RailGunner>
I vote Republican. (Listens for the screams of terror)
        </Darth RailGunner>

Oh... yeah, you said that "we haven't seen yet". In that case, the answer is "No".

Actually, to be serious for a moment, I hope you realize I wasn't being serious in the grandparent post.

Now where is my shrubbery, or I shall be forced to say "Ni!" at you again!

        • I know you weren't :-)

          Hence, the "dark side" comment.

BTW - Most people khere's a big difference between republican and neocon, and that sometimes you have to hold your nose and vote for the one that smells the least like week-old fish. The last few elections up here, none of the parties passed the "smell test." I wish there was a "none of the above" option. Or even a CowboyNeal option.

After all, how much more of a mess could CowboyNeal do?

          • BTW - Most people khere's a big difference between republican and neocon

Well, they are entirely different things. Republican is a party affiliation, and neoconservative is a political belief system. Most neoconservatives are Republicans (though not all). But they are entirely different things.
        • I vote Republican. (Listens for the screams of terror)

          ...

          Now where is my shrubbery...

Most often he is on vacation I think :-) Speaking of more shrubbery, I wonder when Jeb [jeb.org] will be making his run for the white house?

p.s. The fact that Railgunner doesn't automatically foe people for having different views than he does fills me with hope that some day this country could actually start acting like "One nation" again (seriously, I am not kidding). Ok I better quit now before I get all weepy and start some kin

          • p.s. The fact that Railgunner doesn't automatically foe people for having different views than he does

I don't know if this is meant to imply I do, but the clear fact is that I not only do not "automatically" foe people for having different views from me, but I have NEVER foe'd someone for having different views from me. I foe people for lying, for being belligerent assholes, and so on. But not for disagreeing. As evidence by the various people that disagree with me most of the time who post in my journal
            • Actually my comment wasn't aimed at anyone in particular, but in the past I have had people foe me for disagreeing with them (at least that was my assumption, except this guy [slashdot.org] who apparently foed me for an offhand comment I made about boxing in speeders in traffic.) I have also seen people comment that they have foed someone for this reason. Mostly my comment was intended to thank Railgunner for reading my comments, even though he and I have pretty different opinions on some things :-)
        • I would like to take this opportunity to say that I am have the dark sides tomhudson hasn't heard of covered.* Yet I still am not on his foes list.

          Cheers,

          Ethelred

          * - In response to the obvious question "name one", I would say "I can't tell you, otherwise tomhudson will have heard about it". However, the Republicans may be still worse, because they have Dick Cheney.

Err... don't? It's immature and pathetic. Strange, as you otherwise seem like a decent guy... errr, girl... errr, midpoint between the two.

    • Strange, as you otherwise seem like a decent guy... errr, girl... errr, midpoint between the two.

Speaking for myself, you can smell the testosterone when I walk into the room.

Largely because I use this really cool spray bottle.

    • Its just that I noticed at one point that I had 75 freaks, without really trying (except for defending the more liberal point of view) ... and its barely budged since ... whch I find strange.

And I really am interested in what would happen to the system if someone HAD 1,000 freaks. Would there be a database error, would the operation time out, would it hit a certain limit and people not be able to add themselves to the list?

I admit it - a large part is that I'm just curious - I'm not so much interested

It's ten o'clock; do you know where your processes are?
