According to that old Arab Zogby, Democrats (39 percent) are three times more likely to watch the Oscars than Republicans (13 percent).
I have no idea who won any of the awards tonight. (It was tonight, right?)
I didn't realize how many awards RotK won last year until I saw them talking about it on the RotK extended edition DVD, almost a year after the fact.
I see the Oscars, and awards shows like it, to be a depraved and wasteful event in our culture. However, the fact that I feel superior for rising above it mitigates the fact that I rise above it.

I awoke about an hour later to see Leonardo Di Caprio (sp?) talking about his efforts toward environmentalism. I remember him saying that we should protect the environment because it can't protect itself (yeah, OK, I guess so).

Fortunately, he was interrupted by a rabid young (like <12y/o) female fan who was going gonzo near by. His attention was drawn to her, and the camera panned. The media guy asked the girl if she was a fan, and she affirmed. Leo talked to her a bit, then turned back to the camera for a moment, then back to the girl and bent down and gave her a big hug.
She seemed really happy. I thought that was nice of him.

The last time I watched the Oscars, Papa Smurf guest starred. Or maybe that was the Emmys. At that age, I couldn't tell the difference. Actually, I still can't.

I can think of better uses of the time and money but if the entertainment industry is actually worth the money it makes then the spectacle is justified -- it's pretty miniscule in comparison, actually.
The Oscars are a symptom, not the problem.

Last night it was a new showing of Without a Tace and Iron Chef America.
Sure, Iron Chef America is (at the end) an award show, and falls under the 'self-promotion' umbrella for Food Network, but the acceptance speeches are non-existant, and I learned you can use crab in a dessert. Much better fare, for my palette. ;-)
