Journal pudge's Journal: Ron Silver 14

I was watching MSNBC post-convention, and Jeaneane Garofalo was on, so I fast-forwaded through it, until I saw her talking to Ron Silver. Hoping he would smack her down, I watched a bit. She started by flattering him, saying how smart a guy he is, but she's been listening to him, and she just couldn't see how he could think, you know, it drives her crazy that ...

He interjects, "I'm not smart enough to agree with you?"

This is what I'm saying.

Not that I want to dwell on her, because she is not worth my time, but I just wanted to say: thank you, Mr. Silver.

I don't mean that in a mean or nasty way, but it sounded like a 'catchy' subject...

Really -- I don't CARE what they think. They, like me, have a right to an opinion and to voice it. The difference between them and me is that *MY* job doesn't involve trying to make people think I'm something I'm not (i.e. acting).

Here's my problem: When I see Tim Robbins now, I can't see the character he tries to play -- I see this guy spewing political rhetoric. I HATE this because I LIKE him as an actor. From my perspective, he can't 'lose himself in the part'. He loses my movie-ticket money and I lose the enjoyment of what I considered a top-notch actor.

Take Kevin Spacey. I consider this guy to be one of the best actors alive. And I have NO clue about his political beliefs. And I want to keep it that way -- if you know, PLEASE don't share.

Jack Lemon get's a pass. That man is one of the best actors (not just comedy actors) to ever walk the planet. He was left of castro and very outspoken. And I think this speaks loudly to his skill as an actor.

I really avoid reading about the lives of entertainers. Sometimes they are just too 'in your face' and picked up by the news and I cant help it. I didn't give a rats whisker that Bruce Willis thought clinton wasn't qualified to be president... and it pissed me off when I heard him shouting that on the news way-back-when(tm).

The only entertainer who I don't mind hearing from is Ted Nugent. Not becuase I agree with him (we differ more than agree), but because he is just SO damn entertaining when he's trying to make a point.

I'd feel the same about Jeaneane Garofalo if she wasn't so damn hateful and insulting at times. I actually LIKED her as an actress...
    • I agree completely. Although Ron Silver is actually a rare exception, not merely because I like what he says, but because of many of the characters he plays ... I always assumed until a few years ago that he was some far-left liberal, and I think it colored how I viewed him as an actor.

Anyway, yeah, I didn't care what Silver had to say tonight, except that I wanted to hear him slap down Garofalo, and I was not denied. :-)
      • I saw him and Ron Reagan jr. go at it. Reagan was pretty much a condecending prick. Silver had several chances to refute him but failed to.

"And WHO were we funding and supplying weapons to in the Iran/Iraq war? Who was that again? It's right on the tip of my tongue..." Bah. What a prick. Besides, thats a bogus argument.

Silver can be witty, but Reagan was nearly handing him his arse on a platter.
    • Here's my problem: When I see Tim Robbins now, I can't see the character he tries to play -- I see this guy spewing political rhetoric.

You are correct. This is your problem. Not his.

      • No, it is Robbins' problem, because many people feel the same way and it lessens his value as an actor.
        • No... it is Jhon's.

He can't suspend disbelief to see Tim as his character. His characters, except for a few, aren't "spewing" this stuff, but he can't separate the two. The "problem" is one of his making.

Sure, he doesn't have to like Tim's acting talents, but he said you did. He has a personal problem with Robbins. Jhon doesn't agree with him on a personal level and has let that bother performances that he would have otherwise liked.

And that's completely valid. Jhon doesn't like Tim Robbins and there
          • Also, a correction:
"because many people feel the same way and it lessens his value as an actor"

            should really be
"because many people feel the same way and it lessens his value as an actor IN THEIR EYES."

There's no substantive difference. If people dislike him personally, they won't go see him in movies, which means directors will be less likely to hire him or pay him a lot of money.

I am not saying Tim is killing his career here, only that this is a problem all high-profile entertainers have to deal with
      • How clever. Chop off the end of my statement where I indicate how this also effects Robbins and only focus on a single, out of context thought. Then apply a zinger!

What a clever way to totally miss my point!
        • You're point was pretty good. You don't like actors that disagree with your political bent or who exhibit other behaviors that you don't like or that are just unflattering and therefore you try not to get caught up in the cult of celebrity so as not to "ruin" performances for you.

          That's a completely valid response.

I don't happen to necessarily agree with your thinking, but I can appreciate it.

I have the same response with some actors. I don't like them as people (or what I know of them as people) and t
          • You don't like actors that disagree with your political bent
It's less that and more ANY bent. I dont WANT to know if I agree with them or not. The goal of an actor is to make me (the audience) believe them in their role. It becomes much harder for them if I know too much about them. I agree with Willis in that I didn't like Clinton either. I do NOT want to hear that coming from Willis if he is giong to try and entertain me.
  • Okay, so I totally agree that Janeane Garofalo's "character flaw" comment is very arrogant, and also wrong. I know I'm not the only one having intellecutal discussions with those who are further to the right (of which, I, by definition am the center), and those who are more left.

Now I know I'm not as smart as either you OR her, but I do like to point out inconsistencies when I see them. If you're so humble and unassuming, why the hell are you so sure that you're right and she's wrong? If you're going to co
    • If you're so humble and unassuming, why the hell are you so sure that you're right and she's wrong? If you're going to complain about people's arrogance, don't in the same post say: she'll reel or wind up in a "fetal position" after talking to me.

I never said I was humble or unassuming. Speaking of assuming, you appear to be assuming I mean by the fetal position phrase that I would put her there because I would prove I am right. No, it is about that at all; I think the context shows that what I would p
