Journal pudge's Journal: The Answer to Abolishing Pachelbel's Canon 5

In one of the stupidest court rulings in history, a federal judge upheld the ban of an instrumental version of Ave Maria from a public school ceremony because it was deemed religious.

Yes, that is just nonsense. Most of our music today is derived from or influenced by religious music. Which got me thinking ... Pachelbel's Canon is not a religious tune as best I can tell, but he did write a lot of religious music, and we could perhaps perform a service to society if we banned all music based on it!

  • it does get over played - but that doesn't change the fact that it kicks ass.

I'd say that it is safe to assume that almost every single piece of classical music in existence is religious on some level. I'd go further to propose that the enjoyment of music is a religious experience. In fact - participating in the creation or enjoyment of art is never a philosophically neutral activity.

So you want to abolish all music from public school graduation ceremonies?!
      • Not just music. Abolish speeches with content that isn't purely factual. Abolish any kind of decorations that aren't purely utilitarian. Abolish clothing that is 'attractive', 'ugly' or anything else that may get the mind to think of things that might influence another's view of what this world is about.

Of course the real solution is abolishing the institution that brought about the need to have a graduation ceremony. I bet every kid that would hear this song, would also have been taught that 2+

  • It seems some people are just looking for things to abolish these days. You might even say they are doing it with a religous fervor.

p.s. Got any thoughts on the Seattle 10th anniversary party yet?

We all like praise, but a hike in our pay is the best kind of ways.
