I'm a loyal Democrat but I have loyalties that are greater than those to my party, and that's my loyalty to my state and my country.
I've been mulling the above quote over in my mind. A lot of Democrats seem to be angered by this. I can't, for the life of me, figure out why. I'd be angered by anyone for whom this wasn't true, and anyone angered by this quote is someone I'd not only distance myself from, but be encouraged to make sure never got into any sort of political power.

Because times have changed. I'm in favor of limiting the federal government as severly as possible (since so many of the Constitutional limitations have long ago vanished). Deferring powers to the state & local municipalities would be ideal - but it just isn't working like that. It's obvious to me, once I had noticed something in particular about Liberal Democrats -- they have a "win at all costs" mindset. There's no time right now for respecting diversity of opinion within the party, they're busy desperately trying to figure out a way to win back power. Since's that's the #1 goal, if a respected senior senator (and veep candidate) has to be jettisoned, them's the breaks.

I look at it this way: I value associations I choose over associations I did not choose. I value most of the associations I choose above myself, but not the ones I'm essentially forced to choose (like work, for example). I value family
