Journal mercedo's Journal: Why We Call Them By Number? 5

We have about 30 typhoons every year. Our island is often called 'typhoon Ginza', Ginza is the most populous shopping zone in Japan.

Thus we call them in numbers. We can call the days of the week in their names -Monday, Tuesday,...we can call the name of the months -January, February,..But how come we could call Jane, Bob, Nancy, Ted, Lucy, James, etc,...

About 38,000 households are already evacuated, early warning system is very important.

Why We Call Them By Number?

  • That in America Natural disasters are named after women .. I know PMT can be bad scary but that's just silly.
How about calling them "Hurricane Bastard" or "Earthquake scum-bag " or even "Tsunami son-of-a-bitch"
    • Hurricanes are named by men and women. alternating. hurricane Andrew anyone :p
      • heh that's true (forgot about those), why "Hurricane Andrew" and not "Hurricane Stalin".
Lets name them after evil and nasty things.
Hurricane Katrina should be renamed "Hurricane Sadistic bitch"
      • In the late 80s the "US National Weather Center" started to run out of unique 'girl' names, and started alternating. They have names pre-chosen for several years out...

ALSO - the names are Alpha-ordered... Katrina is the 11th Tropical Storm (Tropical Storms get names, and some become Hurricanes). And yes, Andrew was the first Tropical Storm of the '92 hurricane season. I was living in Florida at the time. Thankfully 50 miles north.

    • It is based on tradition, so I am not particulary opposed to calling them human names, but if America were prone to hurricanes much more than ever, Americans might start calling them by just numbers.
